Wednesday Comics #9

-Batman- Hardy Stone is with Luna when Batman strikes. Luna actually guns down Stone to prevent him from talking to Batman and drives off. The mystery deepens! 1/1.

-Kamandi- Tuftan and his father are just about to be killed when Kamandi shows up with some good ol’ fashioned weapons from the 20th century. It looks like we’re gonna have an epic apes vs. tigers battle. I love the story-telling style of this, with no word balloons at all. 2/2.

-Superman- Finally this is starting to make sense. It only took 9 issues. Superman’s indecision was due to the telepathy of the aliens. Unfortunately for the aliens it works both ways and Superman knows their weakness. This made sense for the first time and now the indecision (which took too long to play out) makes more sense now. 3/3.

-Deadman- Deadman challenges the dreaded Kalak in what is a visually appealing issue. 4/4.

-Green Lantern- Hal quickly gets rid of the alien presence from Dillon only to learn that there’s an alien invasion coming for Earth. Well, Dillon was saved more quickly that I thought but segueing that into an alien invasion story is pure genius by Busiek. 5/5.

-Metamorpho- Metamorpho and Urania continue their journey through the periodic table but unfortunately both heroes fall. The writing by Gaiman is so ingenious I can’t even begin to explain it. Again this is the star of the issue. 6/6.

-Teen Titans- The Titans battle Triton as Robin frees Blue Beetle. He swears he’s gonna get the Titans to work as a team because it is only as a team they’ll win. And then Beetle becomes Triton. Uh-oh. I’ve mentioned before that this is a lot like the cartoon series in the visual sense and the story is just loaded with fun moments. 7/7.

-Strange Adventures- Alanna and Zotar are about to be overcome by Korgo and his forces and they will be defeated. They can only be saved by a miracle. Wait a second, who is this popping out of the sky? It’s Adam Strange! Talk about Deus Ex Machina! This is heading in the right direction and brings a certain uniqueness to Wednesday Comics. 8/8.

-Supergirl- Doc Midnite tells Supergirl that the pets are acting crazy due to solar flares from the sun and there seems to be something alien causing them and they will get really deadly soon if not checked out. So Supergirl heads out to check on the sun problems as the super pets get out on their own to undoubtedly wreak havoc. This is just pure fun. 9/9.

-Metal Men- Pretorious again tells the Metal Men they are screwed because Chemo’s about to blow but the Metal Men won’t take that answer. I feel that this is moving the slowest of all titles (except maybe Sgt. Rock) but where this is starting to get tiring is that it is repeating the same things over and over. The last three issues have been basically the same. 9/10.

-Wonder Woman- Diana has all the tools she needs (except for one) and we see the main villains of this piece. Wonder Woman charges into a trap (she is young after all) and I’ve said it before, this is just an important series in general just because it’s such a great origin. 10/11.

-Sgt. Rock- The Nazi is gunned down as Rock is recaptured. Have no fear, the Easy Co. is near! It’s moving slowly but it is moving and going forward so it gets it point this week. 11/12.

-Flash- Man, when I thought that nothing could top Metamorpho we have this amazing issue of the Flash. The Flash is going crazy with the time-travel and there are some great Flash type comic strips that seem to riff of Dagwood and Charlie Brown. This is just really cutting edge stuff. 12/13.

-Demon & Catwoman- So Catwoman manages to free herself and the Demon and Morgaine is pissed. They couldn’t find ANY other story to put here? 12/14.

-Hawkman- Hawkman tells the survivors to flee the scene as he prepares to take on a charging T-Rex. This has slowed down a bit but dinosaurs are cool and hey, it’s my column I can do whatever I want! 13/15.

-The Bottom Line- Even though this wasn’t the best issue of Wednesday Comics in terms of point accumulation, it was my favorite issue because of the very strong Flash and Metamorpho stories. They were both nothing short of excellent and both have been great reads during the first three-quarters of the series.
