Wednesday Comics #8

-Batman- Hardy Stone, the shooter, is freed since someone paid his bail. It seems that he’s in with Luna (the ex-wife) and they are setting up Luna’s brother, Carlton. This is a rather interesting mystery so far and it really gets back to Batman being a detective first and foremost. 1/1.

-Kamandi- Kamandi and the crew team-up with the lions to try and save Tuftan. Luckily they are real lions and not the Detroit Lions, otherwise Kamandi would be in real trouble. This is another slower issue but it is building nicely. 2/2.

-Superman- Well, Superman’s streak couldn’t continue. Superman’s all questioning his role on Earth and it’s just like, well, we know he’s an outsider and he’s dealt with these feelings before so why do we need to re-read it here? 2/3.

-Deadman- Deadman and the dead women join forces to take on Kalak, the demon murderer behind it all. Like Kamandi it was a bit of a slower issue but it is at least building somewhere. 3/4.

-Green Lantern- Hal is battling the Dillon alien being and when Hal unmasks he sees Dillon reappear if only for a moment. I like how there are still questions to be answered (how did Dillon become the alien and how will Hal save him) and like a few titles before it is moving quite nicely along. 4/5.

-Metamorpho- This is definitely the star of the issue. Metamorpho and the female version take a walk through the periodic table, complete with sentences containing the periodic table symbols. It is wacky fun and really has a lot of clever bits of dialogue from Gaiman. Well-written, well-drawn and a whole lotta fun. 5/6.

-Teen Titans- This issue really deals with Robin’s insecurities as leader of the Titans as he’s about to face off against Triton. Another issue where it slowed down for the sake of the story and that is only enhancing the story. 6/7.

-Strange Adventures- This issue focuses on Alanna heading to Zotar to form an alliance with him in order to combat fellow monkey-man Korgo. Another issue that is developing nicely. See, it has a situation and a conflict (Strange is zapped away but still needs to save his woman) and the story are moving in a way that is heading for the resolution. That’s what Superman is bothering me. What is the conflict? Is it Superman’s internal struggle with being an outsider of is it the aliens? 7/8.

-Supergirl- The super-pets are monitored by Dr. Midnight and after Streaky goes mad, he tells Supergirl he thinks he has an answer for what is causing their wackiness. This is easily the most fun of the stories in Wednesday Comics. 8/9.

-Metal Men- Pretorious tells Morrow that he and his Metal Men are screwed because Chemo has been cracked and he’s gonna go nuclear. This is weird as it is moving quickly but feels like it is taking forever to get from point A to point B. 9/10.

-Wonder Woman- Diana, looking for her kidnapped friends, is able to find her lasso after freeing a beast that was wrapped in the rope. I love the art, I love the direction, and this is one of the best stories in Wednesday Comics. 10/11.

-Sgt. Rock- Rock and the German who freed him encounter a Nazi who takes the traitor prisoner again. This is the slowest moving of the 15 titles in here but it’s got an old-fashioned Silver Age feel that I really dig. 11/12.

-Flash- The Flashes think they are victorious while Barry is out to dinner with Iris but they suffer some sort of feedback, which is where the nose bleeds came from, and they all collapse. Honestly this is one of my favorite Flash stories I’ve read. Of course, I’m not a huge Flash fan so I haven’t read much. This doesn’t make this any less cool, of course. 12/13.

-Demon & Catwoman- Morgaine seemingly takes over Catwoman’s body. Let’s just move on…12/14.

-Hawkman- Hawkman calls for help since he’s surrounded by a bunch of dinosaur’s. Unfortunately no one in the League is available except Aquaman. Hawkman asks to send him anyway. I know there’s a joke to be made there somewhere. This is a lot of fun and Baker’s art is really electric. 13/15.

-The Bottom Line- Everything here is still going strong and the newspaper gimmick is going strong thanks to the strong stories being told. The Demon and Superman stories still aren’t setting my world on fire but the batting average on this title is still excellent so that is forgiven.
