I wrote at the beginning of last month’s TPL that it was a light week, with only 15 books being picked up. Well, this week is even lighter. I couldn’t believe it that only 9 titles were in my pull box this week. I shouldn’t be too surprised since there are 5 Wednesdays in October (and 3 pay days for myself, awesome). The only troubling thing is that it looks like a projected 98 comics I will be picking up in the next four weeks, or about 25 a week. Why couldn’t any be this week and make it a little more even? Oh well, at least this one won’t be late, despite having class on Friday night, class Saturday morning, then an open house on Saturday afternoon. The weekend is pretty much shot right there. Luckily, I hope to have this finished before then.
Spoilers Ahead
The Main Event: -Marvel Apes #3- This has a brief history of how Capt. Ape became a vampire and he’s actually not the real Cap. He’s still frozen. So Gibbon and the rest of the renegades find this Cap and free him, and he’s ready to take on the fake Cap who has been impersonating him. The back-up is short, and just talks about Secret War in Marvel Ape version. Another fun issue with an actual plot that makes this one of the better stories from Marvel in recent months. 1/1.
-DC Universe: Decisions #2- This continues to be a fun series. What would happen if our heroes started backing presidential candidates? Of course we see it in our own presidential candidates with celebrities backing them and making weird videos telling us not to vote. Anyway, Green Lantern is mad that Green Arrow backed someone, prompting other heroes to back candidates and Lois running stories on them. Of course, none of the big three have backed anyone yet, until Bruce Wayne backs one of the candidates at the end. Now we can get started, as Wonder Woman is teased to back someone next issue. I thought Winick was good writing the political One Year Later story in GL and this is like a social commentary on what’s going on in the current election. 1/1.
Marvel -Cable #7- The X-Men find Bishop, Cable has an older mutant baby, and Bishop sends a task force against Cable. Nothing terribly essential here. 1/2. -House of M: Civil War #2- Magneto assembles an army to take on those who oppress mutants, targeting Genosha first and fights a Russian super-team. This is cool to see how Magneto came to take over the HoM universe via his own Civil War. 2/3. -New Exiles #12- Kat saves Sabretooth from the evil Wolverine who is married to evil Sue Richards in just stunning fashion, phasing his adamantium out of him. We even get a look back on her past. This was the best issue so far of the new series. 3/4.
DC -Batman #680- The Batman of Zur-En-Arrh is still struggling with his mental issues. He has been mentally broken and the Zur-En-Arrh Batman (dressed in Robin’s colors) is his mental defense. He comes face to face with Joker, as the Black Mask and others watch on. Joker has Jezebel Jet captured and facing impending death, when Batman bursts in and he starts to succumb to the poison in Jet’s cell. I have to say that this was a little confusing at first but it has really picked up steam and as we head towards our conclusion we have a real awesome story on our hands. 2/2. -Justice League of America #25- This is the anniversary issue, since getting to 25 issues is some accomplishment now. They should only celebrate 25 issues released without any delays. That would be something. Anyway, this is done by a bunch of different artists but written by one guy, Dwayne McDuffie. So Vixen and Animal Man are taken away into the totem that has been messing with their powers. Red Tornado and Batman meet Ivo and turn the tables on him. The Spider totem basically gives us a glimpse at alternate realities pertaining to our DC heroes. This was a good way to set up the conclusion, but nothing I actually remembered 5 days after I read it. 3/3. -Nightwing #149- Robin battles the Rogue’s Gallery what was just a figment of Nightwing’s imagination thanks to some fear gas. Nightwing defeats the gas, but Two-Face kills the person he asked Nightwing to protect. Now Two-Face is mad that Nightwing didn’t protect him. This was really cool to see just how crazy Two-Face is. Doesn’t really relate to RIP but it’s a very good story. 4/4. -Trinity #18- Trinity’s second act starts here, and it starts with a crazy new reality where the DC heroes are not all they seem. The evil Trinity really mucked things up, didn’t they? Lois Lane goes on a diatribe against some “heroes,” while the guys who were fighting in that castle are on this new Earth and are a little confused. The second tale is of one of the people on this new Earth remembering things about the old one. I didn’t know anybody sensed it from there, but it looks like some remember. This is almost House of M-like, but not. Well, I like this new look DCU and want to see how things progress. 5/5.
The Awards -Book of the Week- Batman #680 was just a cool issue. It was the second one I read this week and still the best. Just to see what Morrison has built up to during the course of his run was just amazing. High marks for Grant and company here. -Disappointment of the Week- Cable #7 was the easy choice, being a tale that was actually too simple. I just can’t get into this story for some reason. -Cover of the Week- Trinity #18 was the coolest cover, though there were only 9 to choose from. It was a cool Jim Lee Batman cover.
-The Bottom Line- It was only 9 books, so I didn’t expect much. 8/9 is about 90%, so take it for what it is. I can’t complain too much about this week, but it wasn’t something that blew me away in the least. Just a very slooow week.
