Misc. Reviews

We’re back with another week of The Pull List. This is a relatively light week with 8 Marvels, 10 DC’s and 1 Wildstorm issue. That’s 19 total and with a lot of free time this weekend, this should be donw in no time.

Spoiler Alert

The Main Event

-Marvel Zombies 2 #1- The Marvel Zombies are back! They seem to have eaten the entire universe and they are starving. They decide to head back to Earth to try to get Reed’s dimension jumping device. Back on Earth, an old Black Panther is the king of New Wakanda and a band of Acolytes want to take him down. Black Panther is stabbed in his sleep and a zombiefied Wasp bites him to save him! Black Panther is now a zombie and they need to detox to stop the hunger. Looks like we have a Zombie civil war on our hands. Excellen debut issue.

-The Death of the New Gods #1- Darkseid is worried about the amount of New Gods being killed. More and more New Gods are turning up dead, including the guy with the ski’s, Magnar, and more surprisingly, Big Barda. The New Gods are dropping like flies and Darkseid seems to be taking some defensive measures. This was a set-up to the next 8 issues and I wonder how many more New Gods will bite the dust before this ends.

Marvel
-Avengers Classic #5- This includes a reprint of the “classic” Avengers #5 from 1964, which, in all honesty, wasn’t too great. The back-up was actually very good though, showing an early meeting between Captain America and Thor and a Fenris wolf told through the eyes of a old veteran. Very good back-up.
-Captain America #31- Bucky is brainwashed by Faustus and despite Bucky’s best efforts, he is brainwashed. His first task is to shoot Faustus’ nurse in the head. The nurse is none other than Sharon Carter and the issue ends with a gun shot. I think Bucky didn’t really shoot her. Tony Stark tries to assess the amount of damage Faustus did.
-Captain America: The Chosen #3- We learn that Captain America is really dying but his mind is powerful enough that he can project his image to others, first for deception to enemies, but as he went closer to death, to military personnel. This is how the soldier in Iraq sees Captain America. This seems to be more of a “The End” type story and I don’t know why it took three issues to get to this point. Still, I have enjoyed it so far.
-Marvel Comics Presents #2- There were four stories presented in this one. The Vanguard one was by far the best, a murder mystery where the primary suspect appears to be the Watcher! The build-up and intrigue is great thus far for this story. The Hellcat story didn’t do anything for me, she basically met her other selves. The Taskmaster story was just Maria Hill hiring him unbeknownst to SHIELD to test their defences. The Weapon Omega story was just alright. He seems to like his powers now.
-Mighty Avengers #5- The Mighty Avengers are still getting throttled by Ultron who has launched a nuclear missile. Ms. Marvel stops it but it explodes with her on it. Sentry’s wife is now allegedly dead. Ares has a plan to stop Ultron and makes Pym shrink him so he can fly into Ultron. The art was very nice but the story seems to take a while to develop. Maybe it is because the issues are so far apart.
-Penance Relentless #2- Penance goes looking for The Robot Master, destroys all his robots and priceless artifacts and asks just one question, if he knows how to launch a missile from the disc he is carrying. It seems he is after Nitro. Tony Stark learns of his motives thanks in no part to Norman who seems to be keeping this from Tony. Tony banishes Norman for now and has to go after Penance. The numbers from the first issue may be launch codes. This has been a surprise for me, I didn’t think it would be this good.
-Wolverine Origins #18- Origins continues along with Captain America meeting with Nick Fury and Logan. Cap is portrayed somewhat as a joke at first to Logan and the troops and it is actually Bucky as the hardass. Logan thinks that he and Bucky were trained by the same person since Bucky is also ruthless. He has a mission to take out Strucker that Cap didn’t know about. There was a funny moment when Nick talks to Cap about his shield and perhaps gets the idea of some sort of special ops team. Bucky and Logan having a connection to this Romulus character is a bit interesting.

DC
-Birds of Prey #111- This is a one-off story where Calculator looks for a disc that may hold information on who Oracle really is. Babs knows about this too and goes to the same convention as the Calculator to get this disc. They end up meeting each other, not knowing their real identities, and they actually have lunch together! They both end up logged onto the computer and Calculator knows its Babs but doesn’t suspect her to be Oracle (it has to be a man). The payoff at the end was worth it for me and this was an enjoyable issue. This has been two one-shot stories in a row and I don’t know if they will start up an arc soon or keep it like this.
-Brave and the Bold #7- Wonder Woman and Power Girl have teamed up to fight some mummies when Power Girl accidently admits (while holding the lasso) that she will kill Superman. It seems to be the work of an ancient magician known as Megistus. Wonder Woman tries to prevent this from happening but Power Girl is taken over by Megistus thanks to the Philosopher’s Stone and she goes after Superman, almost killing him with red kryptonite. Wonder Woman shows up and helps rid Power Girl of this influence and she throws the stone into the sun. This wasn’t too bad. The Challangers are shown at the end to posses the book that tells the future and the past (but doesn’t include them). Next issue, Flash and Doom Patrol. I enjoyed this a lot more than the previous arc, they should keep it just a team-up of two groups and make it interesting for an issue.
-Catwoman #72- Catwoman calls Zatanna for help. She wants to forget. It turns out that she actually put Helena up for adoption and wants to forget her daughter ever existed. Zatanna tells her that she shouldn’t do that for Helena’s sake and Catwoman goes home. She wakes up to see all her stuff is gone and then her apartment explodes with her escaping at the last minute. She mentions that is not a good day to mess with her and we may have an evil Catwoman back! Very good issue and it seems Helena is gone for the time being to allow Catwoman to return to her evil roots.
-Checkmate #19- In this issue, Waller and Faraday are still sending criminals away to somewhere, and Checkmate are still on their tails. Sasha and Fire decide to go after Deadshot, the guy who took out Mademoiselle Marie. Sasha makes contact with him and is shocked to learn Deadshot has been told to shoot to kill any of them. Waller also has compromising pictures of Mister Terrific, Sasha and Martian Manhunter. This wasn’t too bad and is more interesting than it has been.
-Countdown 28- Forager, a New God, takes Jimmy Olsen to assist her in finding out who is killing the New Gods. The Trickster and Piper escape from Deadshot and the Suicide Squad though Double Down is taken. Brother Eye lets Karate Kid leave and tells him that his virus strain is similar to one in Bludhaven. Mary Marvel enjoys her new powers in an odd way and Shadowpact knows they need to stop her. Monarch tries to hire the Challengers to fight with him but they refuse and a fight breaks out, with the Challengers going down. Very good issue with lots of storylines advancing.
-Justice League of America #14- Lex Luthor confronts Superman and Black Lightning and shows them a troubling image of the rest of of the JLA tied up and beaten by the Injustice League. Superman and Black Lightning try to make the save but they get overpowered as well. The JLA are certainly getting their asses handed to them and I wonder how they will get out of this one.
-Metamorpho Year One #2- Rex is troubled by his new disfigurement and is quickly running out of oxygen in the pyramid. He manages to escape with his powers though he doesn’t know how to control them yet or how he even escaped. He goes back home to meet with Stagg and Stagg is less than pleased to see him. He uses the Orb of Ra to put him to his knees and is ready to shoot him in the head. This is a very enjoyable year one so far and since I am not familiar with Metamorpho it has progressed very well.
-Shadowpact #18- Nightshade, Ragman and Nightmaster are still stuck in the Nightshade dimension. Enchantress continues to train The Warlock’s Daughter in her powers. Enchantress and Detective Chimp investigate a string of murders that are related to some powerful magician. That magician we learn is Devon, who is sacrificing magician women to the Sun God. His next sacrifice seems to be none other than Warlock’s Daughter.
-Superman Confidential #7- This is a crazy tale of Superman battling an old love, named Lori, who allegedly knows his secret identity, who also is under a spell of some magic amulet and turns herself and all of Metropolis into Mermaids and Mermen. Superman wins, and this was just really weird.

Wildstorm
-The Programme #4- We learn more about the only Russian who knew where the four projects (superhumans) were hidden. He is later thrown in jail for talking out against Stalin while drunk at a party. He is retrieved years later learning that two of his projects were loose. The US is also working on their superheroes, too. This is just getting more interesting and intriguing by the moment.

Awards
-Book of the Week- Marvel Zombies 2 #1 was the most enjoyable issue I read this week in a week with a lot of good issues. The set-up is fantastic and I just love the Zombies.
-Disappointment of the Week- Superman Confidential #7 continues its horrible ways with an absolutely ridiculous story about Superman that was neither entertaining and I am pissed I lost my three bucks on it.
-Cover of the Week- Arthur wins again. Marvel Zombies 2 was easily the best cover this week. I can’t get enough of Suydam’s zombi-fied covers.
