Well, it’s another week and by the time you read this, it’ll be almost ready for turkey day! Yes, Thanksgiving is here and with it comes the Christmas season. I can’t believe how quickly it has come. Anyway, we have 13 Marvels, 5 DC’s and 1 Wildstorm comic for a modest 19-issue pull.
Spoiler Alert
The Main Event -Avengers/Invaders #6- I forgot about this title, actually. But this is still high-profile enough to be the only main eventer of the week. The New Avengers and Bucky find the older version of the soldier who is the key to everything, and they mention the Cosmic Cube. Meanwhile, the original Torch goes crazy, taking out Sentry in seconds and starting a revolution with the androids. Meanwhile (part two), Toro finds out he’s dead and wonders why Torch wasn’t there to save him. You know why this is the main even? It just rocks. You have the old meeting the new and combining to make a great story. I didn’t see Torch leading a revolt with the LMD’s, to Toro now being broken up about what happened and possibly being the one to stop Torch. Interesting and recommended. 1/1.
Marvel -Amazing Spider-Man #578- This is Spider-Man at his finest. The lovable loser sees Peter think he’s lucky until the subway car he’s in get caught in an explosion, having to fight the Shocker, and have the tunnel he’s in start to collapse. Sorry, Spidey, you’re luck sucks but its really fun story-telling at its finest. 2/2. -Darktower: Treachery #3- We learn more about Roland’s disgraced mother, the girl who wants to be a gun-slinger, Roland struggling with the grapefruit, and the impending death of Roland’s father. This was a solid tale, and as a trade it’ll read marvelously, but this issue was a little slow at times. Still, the art sells this alone. 3/3. -Deadpool #4- Deadpool is broke and heads to Zeke for a job, and he has one for him, find his wife and kill the doctor making people into zombies. Hi-jinks and tom-foolery follows, and this has all the charm that the Nicieza series did. If you like that, you need to pick this up. 4/4. -Fantastic Four #561-After all the talk, Johnny and Doom start to power the device, Reed comes in at the last minute with a genius solution, everyone’s happy, then Doom kills old version of Sue Storm. I guess the funeral follows? Eh, this isn’t a great FF tale and it is a by-the-numbers tale with predictable plot twists. I’m still waiting for this to be the World’s Greatest Comics Magazine. 4/5. -Iron Man: Director of SHIELD #35-War Machine fights back and the Russians help him out this time. Yay. It’s Secret Invasion, and tie-ins rule the day. This wasn’t anything to go out of your way for. 4/6. -Punisher War Journal #25- I don’t even know why I bought this. I just thumbed through it to be honest and it seemed terrible. 4/7. -Ultimate Fantastic Four #58- Sue is still messed up from the opening issue of Ultimatum so Ben finds the only one who can help her, the Mole Man. They find him and he tells them they need to shrink and take a trip through Sue. Journey through the center of Sue? This was a decent opener to start the final arc of Ultimate FF. 5/8. -Uncanny X-Men #504- We finally start a fun arc, getting rid of Land on art to make way for the much better Dodson. There’re two great things here. First, Hank and Warren try to recruit a genius scientist who the neo-Nazi’s want to kill. They end up recruiting him. The best part of the issue was Emma taking a walk through the mind of Scott and seeing the perverse way he looks at the X-Ladies. Of course, he does have a black box that no one, not even Emma, can break, and that’s where he keeps his secrets. I can finally read this and enjoy this again. 6/9. -X-Factor #37- Jaime sees how murderous his dupes can be and it worries him somewhat. Terry doesn’t believe Val Cooper that Jaime had been working for her and X-Factor sees a whole bunch of Darwin clones breathing down their necks. That’s never good. Oh, Terry’s water broke, too. A new artist can do so much for a title. This was a lot better than previous issues. 7/10. -X-Men: Legacy #218- Lady Sinister waits for Xavier to probe the mind of Daken so he can face the trap in there, and it works. Xavier’s knocked out but Daken’s memories are unlocked. Lady Sinister is happy until she is impaled on Daken’s claws. Meanwhile, Wolvie battles Shaw and he has a showdown with Daken at issue’s end. Nothing to say except it was a very good issue. 8/11 -X-Men: World’s Apart #2- Storm escapes with Nezhno and Storm also strikes down the plane of Cyclops since he was under Shadow Master’s control, too. Storm and Nezzie defeat a whole bunch of old brides-to-be of Panther only to have Panther show up. I can’t say anything bad about it, so it gets the courtesy point. 9/12. -Young X-Men #8- Ink finds out he isn’t a mutant but his tattoo artist is. The Young X-Men go to find them and end up in a paintball field with the tattooist and a bunch of his now super-powered friends. Someone named Cipher (a female) shows up at the end. He’s not the Cipher I know! Another solid issue from the YXM crew. 10/13.
DC -Batgirl #5- Batgirl evades Batman and Robin (who follow her after Nightwing fails) and heads to Platinum Flats where she comes face to face with her father. I bought 5 issues so one more isn’t too much, but this hasn’t been all that great for me. This is only for hardcore Batgirl fans, and I am not one of them. 0/1. -Batman and the Outsiders #13- Luckily this is a more accessible tale for Batgirl fans. Gotham’s being overrun by criminals and with no Batman, it’s a madhouse. So Batgirl tries to assemble a new Outsiders team, one that replaces certain aspects of Batman. Nightwing finds out and isn’t too happy and Vigilante makes an appearance, too. Gotham Underground was the basis of this, I assume, but reading it won’t make this any less enjoyable. This is a good start to a new beginning for Batgirl. 1/2. -JSA Kingdom Come Special: Magog #1- This is a really cool story of Magog using his powers and finding out his old military squad is in trouble. He tries to save them but the enemies had done their damage. Magog takes out his wrath on them, and they deserved it. There’s a Starman origin as a back-up. This wasn’t as good as Superman, but it adds to the character of Magog. 2/3. -Supergirl #35- Supergirl wrestles with living on her own or with her newly arrived family. She learns from her father she has Kryptonite poisoning so her parents help cure her. She has all her memories back now and we should be seeing more on that later. Anyway, Krypton exploded but Kandar survived thanks to Braniac technology. Of course, Brainy finds them and Supergirl was shot off in a ship. There is a new Supergirl that shows up at the end, too. This is the first I’ve read of Supergirl in a while and this was a nice reintroduction for me. 3/4. -Trinity #25- We get a neat little history of this new Earth with their Flash being downed in a crisis, too. Tarot has some weird vision at the end, too. Meanwhile, the back-up has Freddie joining together Lois Lane, Agent Tresser, Dick Grayson and Supergirl and tells them of what their lives are really like, and they agree that something is wrong. This is a very interesting concept so far, and I have been liking it! 4/5. Wildstorm -World of Warcraft #12- This series keeps rolling along as the two Lo’Gosh’s (Lo-Gi’s?) learn that they are the same person that was ripped apart via magic. They know where they are from, that they are two sides of the same coin, but they just want to save their son. I’m enjoying this, and that’s more than I thought I would say when I first started buying this for my dad. 1/1.
Awards -Book of the Week- Uncanny X-Men #504 was just a huge step up from previous months and I am so happy to say that I am finally enjoying it. I applaud Fraction and Dodson for making this fun again. -Disappointment of the Week- Fantastic Four #561 has been just corny for me, it has these twists and turns that are obvious, and it hasn’t felt like an important story at all in its execution. -Cover of the Week- Supergirl #35 beats out all other winners, as the falling Supermen (or in this case, women) was just too cool for words. Another win for Mr. Ross, too.
-The Bottom Line- Marvel had a rocky start but the X-titles redeemed their week in the end. DC and Wildstorm had a small amount of books so a few good ones makes it a good week. I don’t know when I will have time for the next review, not because of lack of time (I’ll have a lot of time for it) but just because it’s Thanksgiving! I wish all of you reading a Happy Thanksgiving and forgive me if I’m late next week!
