This is the third and final installment of CBCU Vol. 1 as I've cleared out of the backlog of comics I pick up every three months. This is very X-title heavy, since that's pretty much the only thing I don't pick up monthly so for non-X-Fans, turn away now!
Spoilers ahead:
-New Excalibur #'s 16-19- Nocturne suffers a stroke, so most of the issues deal with that, especially a solo story (#17) of her struggles. Dazzler dies then comes back to life and the last two issues deal with Albion. None of these issue blew my socks off and I pretty much breezed through them without great joy. -Exiles #'s 90-93- Psylocke joins the team as they fight in a world where Invsible Woman is evil and head of Hydra. Claremont started writing with #90 and through all the controversy, I actually enjoyed it. Psylocke isn't being picked up by the sensors, in an odd twist, but Exiles continues to be a fun title. -New X-Men #'s 35-37-Hellion and X-23 battle some creatures made from Mercury as Kimura (from the X-23 minis) shows up to lay the smack down. The real X-Men (and rest of the New X-Men) show up to win the battle and White Queen bitchslaps Kimura pretty badly, wiping out the one good memory she has. #37 was an awesome Magick story that makes me psyched for the magic storyline Marvel has coming. Still one of the best, if not the best, X-book out there. -Ultimate X-Men- is practically imploding with Cable showing up, killing Xavier, and Cyclops disbanding the X-Men to focus on it being a school. I read this and could barely get through it. I don't know where this is heading but it doesn't seem good. Worst of the ongoing Ultimate titles. -X-Factor #'s 15-18- Jamie is still struggling getting the dupes back and in this arc is a very well-written tale of Jamie running into a dupe that is a pastor with a family. Peter writes his ass off in that issue and the ending is very satisfying. The rest of the issues deal with a Mutant group called X-Ceed causing trouble, with appearances by the Blob and Marrow at the end. M is getting really pissy at the anti-mutant sentiment some are displaying and even crucifies a guy, and brings home a girl recently orphaned. -Phoenix Warsong #5- The mini is finally over, and I am done with the Cuckoo's forever (I hope). Turns out they have about a million clones who end up dead and the three Cuckoos contain the Phoenix in their diamond hearts and can no longer feel. Wow. Pass on this. -X-Men First Class #'s 5-8- These single-issue stories of the original X-Men successfully recreated the magic the Untold Tales of Spider-Man created in the mid-90's. There are some great stories here , that are always fun in nature, never getting too dark or brooding. It's really a breath of fresh air. These 4 tales feature a story of the X-Men fighting with Thor, fighting teenage Skrulls, Angel and Scarlet Witch, and finally meeting with Gorilla-Man from the Agents of Atlas! There is a new ongoing being created which I hope can match the Silver age feel of the 4 I read here. Recommended and worth a look for any original X-Men fans.
That's the end of Volume 1. I hope you enjoyed it. If I am still updating this website in three months you should expect a Volume 2! Until then, see you in the regular ongoing TPL!
