Welcome back to the second edition of Comic Book Catch-Up where I get caught up on the happenings of some Marvel books I don't read on a monthly basis.
Spoilers ahead...
-Punisher Max #'s- This is the best Punisher title that's ever been around, Ennis just captures the character so beautifully and it is what the Punisher should be. Here, a bunch of widowed mob wives plan revenge on the Punisher and almost get it, until he is saved by another widow. Excellent stuff, but not for the weak of heart.
-Punisher Presents: Barracuda #'s 1-2- Barracuda was one of the toughest SOB's ever presented in the Max title of Punisher but this mini seems to be playing up his more humurous side. Language is rough so no kids should be reading this. The story seems silly so far, Barracuda taking a mob boss' son to toughen him up, only to turn on the mob boss.
-Ultimate Fantastic Four #'s 38-40- Ult FF #38 was a pretty bad ending to a horrible story overall but was quickly redeemed with an awesome two books to debut Ultimate Diablo. He is played much differently than his 616 counterpart and combining magic with science is always a winner. In brief, Diablo, in 1499, is trapped and cannot escape. He goes to the future and captures family members of the FF to lure the FF to his time and they end up breaking him free. He has an elixir to grant him eternal life but the energy needed will destroy the world. So he uses the future world as the world to be destroyed. Can't wait for the rest of this arc.
-Astonishing X-Men #20- This is building up to Colossus and the X-Men on the Breakworld. Nothing terribly interesting yet.
-X-Men #'s 195-198- The first two issues concluded an odd story where a guy with the powers of the X-Men (I think) battles the X-Men and manages to poison Rogue with something. She's dying so they go to Providence (in the next two issue) where a weapon of mass destruction from the Shi'ar lands, a device which kills people's minds but leaves buildings intact. X-Men has been pretty bad as of late and I hope the big restart with #200 restores this title.
-Uncanny X-Men #'s 483-485- Now this title has restored the X-Men to their proper place in the MU. The X-Men are still in space as Vulcan marries Deathbird and becomes the second in command when D'Ken offers it to him. Vulcan then kills D'Ken and takes over as ruler of the Shi'ar in part 11 (#485). Also, Professor X is thrown into the M'Kraan crystal and Darwin follows, and the X-Men do their best to stop Vulcan's reign of terror. Part 12 should be awesome and Brubaker has shown he can write these mutants in space with the best of them. I hope he doesn't leave the title soon.
-Cable & Deadpool #'s 36-39- Cable's not even in the title anymore leaving Deadpool to star alone, which is fine by me. He's a funny character and when he gets miniaturized by Rhino it leads to more laughs. He has to save an obese Agent X to boot. I don't know where the title is heading without Cable (since he's on the X-Men) but this is a consistent winner in my book, due to the great writing.
