Misc. Reviews

Heroes was a show I never actually watched until the DVD came out. I knew I should’ve watched it since I was a huge comic book fan, but never had time to watch it since at that time I worked nights. When it came out on DVD I picked it up and watched it before the abbreviated Season 2 aired. The card set came out earlier this year and when my LCS had it on sale for $40 it was too good a bargain to pass it up. So here we have Heroes Trading Cards produced by Topps, with a box containing 24 packs with 7 cards a pack.

-Base Set- The bast set is 90 cards. The base set is seperated into a few sections. You have info on all the major characters (their powers, if any, when they appeared) you have the episodes section which deals with, you guessed it, the episodes. The art of Tim Sale has his beautiful paintings in card form, there is an FX secition dealing with some of the effects seen in the show and finally we have a preview of Season Two. Throw in a checklist and a Intro card and you have a very nice looking set. Unfortunately, in my box I only got 80 out of 90 cards, meaning a 89% completion rate.

-Duplicates- With no base set being completed, 76 duplicates is a bit too much, considering I only got 4 more cards in the base set than I had duplicates.

-Triples- None.

Inserts
Not a whole bunch of inserts to be found in here.

-Foil Cards- There are 10 foil cards in this set though no odds were released on how frequently they appear. I got 8 of the cards, which feature the main characters on a foil background. I am going to guess that this comes about 1:3 packs.

-Autographs- Autograph cards are found 1 in every 135 packs so I was shut out on this.

-Sketch Cards- These sketch cards are seeded 1 in every 86 packs and again, goose egg.

-Memorabilia- These are found 1 in every 44 packs and luckily I was able to pull one. I got a piece of Hiro Nakamura’s jacket. I beat the odds on here and happily take this card.

-Bottom Line- I was kind of pissed I didn’t get a full set considering there were an unbelievable 76 extras. In this day and age, it is really inexcusable that a full set wasn’t obtained from here. When I was opening it, half the box was almost exactly the same as the other half. I hope if they make more sets, the collation would be better. The inserts were just alright, though maybe more than one insert found in a box would make this nice. The real allure will be the high-end cards that could be found. The Autographs, Sketch Cards and Memorabilia would be the ones that people look for although I didn’t get a full set, I did get a Memorabilia card, so that took some of the sour taste out of my mouth. To sum it up, the cards were beatiful. They used some great shots from the episodes and the cards were informative. If you can grab this for $40 or less you should pick it up and try and get your Autograph, Sketch Card or Memorabilia. Mild Recommendation.
