I am a huge Family Guy fan so picking this up was a no brainer. The base set focuses on the Blue Harvest hour-long episode that was aired a few months back. It has since been released on DVD (which I have the special edition of). It was a little steep ($65) for such a small box. The box contained 24 packs with 6 cards per pack and featured some interesting inserts. The base cards look exactly like the old Star Wars cards from the late 70’s so the tribute is really there.
-Base Set- The base set is only 50 cards, and a full set was obtained from this box. There is a title card, 9 cards showing the main characters, a checklist, and the rest of the cards have main plots and funny lines from the story.
-Duplicates- I actually got a second complete set from the box. I hope I can parlay this on E-Bay.
-Triples- 31 triples round out the rest of the cards I got from this box.
Inserts -A New Hope- This set of nine cards combine to form A New Hope poster on the front and the scrolling title sequence on the back. I got three of the cards and would like to get the rest of the 6 to put in a card sleeve binder to see the whole image. These were pretty nice and inserted 1:7 packs means I should’ve gotten between 3 and 4 cards so this came out alright.
-Spaceships & Transports- These cards basically show the different ships used in the episode. There are nine cards (situated 1:9) and I pulled two of them, which is about average. This was a nice base set.
-What Happens Next- What Happens Next just shows a scene on the front with what happens on the back. This is found 1:11 packs and I actually got 3 out of the 6, slightly above average. One of the previews I read online said that these didn’t appear in the show but I will have to look into that.
-Scenes from Space- This subset of 6 cards have three cards which show a background and three cards that had some character with clear backgrounds so you can mix and match. I got three of them (again situated 1:11) with two backgrounds and one clear one. This provides about 5 minutes of fun.
-Droid Chat- This set of 3 cards is found about 1 per box, though I don’t know why. It’s just a standard insert showing some of the best Quagmire lines of the show.
-Bottom Line- Bottom line, I have to say take a pass on this. The base set is really cool, and should be picked up. I checked E-Bay and these are (as of March 1st, 2008) sell for about $5-8 dollars. The box really doesn’t feature that many cool extras or inserts. The inserts are alright, but nothing too spectacular. If there were some sort of sketch or autograph or something, that would add to some excitement, but there weren’t. For the SRP ($3 per pack, and about $65 for a sealed box), this just doesn’t deliver on the goods. The retro look of the cards is great, but you would be better off picking up a full set online and enjoy the awesome base set, that being said, if you can get this for $40 or less, it is a fun pack-busting experience and you’ll easily get two full sets. Slight Recommendation to Avoid.
