The duo of Loeb/Sale have done it again. They've crafted a poignantly written, well-drawn tale of a seminal characters' early days that is both reverential to early but also a story that is its own. The focus here is Clark Kent and his transformation from a Smallville local to a city's superhero. The story is told in 4 parts: spring, summer, fall and winter, and each tale is narrated by a different character that is important in Clark's life; Pa Kent, Lois Lane, Lex Luther and Lana Lang.

The narrator's each give a unique view on Superman covering a wide range of emotions. Pa's story tells of his love but also sadness that he's leaving Smallville. Lois' story deals with her awe and even skepticism (why is this super man saving people with no reward), Lex deals with anger and revenge and finally Lana speak about her longing for Clark and understanding that he needs to be in the big city. The four seasons reveal the integral parts of Clark Kent and Superman that made him what he is as well as the tumultuous first year the superhero had. He made his debut in Metropolis but also fled in the fall back home to find himself and having his parents and Lana guide him to his true path.

Those looking for an all-out action book will need to look elsewhere as this is a brilliant character study of the world's most famous superhero. This is Clark's transformation into what we know and love today and the perfect script of Loeb coupled with the subdued Sale pencils make Seasons a must in any Superman collection.
