See, I told you I had something special in store for you this Wednesday! What better way to celebrate Wednesday's than with Wednesday Comics? This is a review of last week's issue in a lot more detail than I normally give to a single issue and you can expect another 10 of these bad boys in the next 10 weeks to come!
Wednesday Comics #2
-Batman- The wealthy man that Batman was asked to save was actually killed off-panel and we pick things up with Bruce at the funeral. The young wife is there and Bruce is a little suspicious. He gets even more suspicious when someone in the shadows tries to shoot her. She is saved by the man she was with at the funeral. This is interesting so far. It’s a mystery that both Bruce and Batman are involved in. 1/1.
-Kamandi- Prince Tuftan is the one in shadows and he needs Kamandi’s help. The apes have captured his father. Kamandi agrees to help but they are attacked by huge rats that have killed Tuftan’s horse and mode of transportation. It looks like they will have to hoof it. Oh, and there are more rats. This has been developed really well. From the great art of Sook to the easily understood yet engrossing story this is definitely a fave of mine. 2/2.
-Superman- Superman has his post-match interview with Batman and Superman is all of sudden very introspective. He doesn’t belong! The alien was right! Batman is just like, dude, deal with it. He’s a little apathetic to say the least. Superman flies off questioning why he ever thought he could talk to Batman. See, my problem with this is that Superman has been on Earth for what, 80 years? Even if you want to say comic book time it is well into its 20th year. You’d think he wouldn’t have those outsider feelings anymore, especially with the Kryptonians now back. Of course, who knows when this story even takes place and there’s nothing that makes you say this takes place in the past. Everything here makes it look current. 2/3.
-Deadman- Deadman happened upon the killer last issue and he’s all ready to take him out when the woman who gave him his powers shows up and tells him it isn’t his place to interfere in this. Deadman decides to do that anyway and before he can do anything is whisked away into nothingness. This is just awesome. The art really reminds me of Cooke and the story has been really interesting thus far. Two pages in and we already have a good one. 3/4.
-Green Lantern- Green Lantern battles some aliens as noted astronaut is on TV. The interview is going well until he starts breaking out in boils. Ouch! This was another set-up issue and although it is moving slowly at least we have a concept of what’s going on and what Green Lantern needs to contend with. 4/5.
-Metamorpho- This was just one big splash page with Metamorpho and crew in the DC version of the Savage Land. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful image but I feel for a one-page story a one-page splash page may be a bit of overkill? There’s a little strip on the bottom of the page with kids talking about other types of characters similar to Metamorpho which was pretty funny. 4/6.
-Teen Titans- This was a really well-done issue. We have Trident mopping up the floor with the Titans and Robin getting really embarrassed when they are saved by Nightwing. It’s like his big brother coming in to stop the big bully beating you up. I like the angle this story took. I wasn’t thrilled with the first issue but this one makes me really look forward to the next issue. 5/7.
-Strange Adventures- Strange is on his way to defeating the invaders when they tell him that he must surrender of the woman will be killed. He promises to give these invaders the secrets of the Zeta beam, too. This is Paul Pope and the art takes some getting used to but if you like Pope, then this is right up your alley. 6/8.
-Supergirl- Supergirl keeps chasing the super-pets. This hasn’t gone anywhere in two weeks. 6/9.
-Metal Men- The Metal Men stop the criminals and think they are heroes, until the police come and tell them to freeze. Yikes, now this is why Magnus didn’t want them interfering. We’ve seen the whole hero being treated as a villain thing before (probably best done with Spider-Man) but I don’t know if this slant has been taken with ROBOTS. This is not bad. 7/10.
-Wonder Woman- Wonder Woman has another crazy dream of fighting some guys near the ocean and almost drowning. She awakes but appears to be a bit wet. Are these really dreams? Hmm, I am interested to see where this is going. I really love the layout of this storyline, too. There is a lot that is fit onto this single page to boot. 8/11.
-Sgt. Rock- Rock is still getting slapped around for about two-thirds of the story before we flashback to see how Rock got into this position. It seems like the Kuberts aren’t doing this as 1 issue each (where they have a beginning, a middle and a cliffhanger) and just did one big story that happened to be 12 pages long with the first 4 being the beginning and so forth. It is kind of jarring since it seems to be the only story done like that in this collection. It makes it stand out, plus it is such a pleasure to have Joe Kubert on art. 9/12.
-Flash- Flash is so upset about Iris leaving him that he actually shakes himself to the past! He sees Iris about to leave and runs downstairs when his (soon to be future) self shows up to find the note. So he tries to prevent himself from opening the letter and they scuffle before Iris comes down the stairs and sees the two of them. This has been just great so far. 10/13.
-Demon & Catwoman- Catwoman tries to steal something but gets punched out through the door and Demon is there. I just don’t get it yet. 10/14.
-Hawkman- Hawkman breaks into the hijacked plane and takes out most of the terrorists. He issues a stern warning for the terrorists still alive. The birds are still narrating and I am still enjoying this. 11/15.
-The Bottom Line- With two issues under their belt now I have a better idea of where some of these stories are going. Not everything can be perfect and enjoyed and there were some things I didn’t like. The Superman and Supergirl stories I think are really lacking right now and things like Demon and Metamorpho just haven’t really gone anywhere yet. That being said, there were more good stories than bad and I say that this still has an incredible value considering the people working on this. I’d definitely still recommend this to anyone though you’d need to read #1 first to really appreciate this one.
