This is a 6-issue mini-series that was originally released in 1985 and 1986. It was written by Ann Nocenti and illustrated by Arthur Adams, very early in both of their careers. The tale follows a new hero named Longshot, who shows up on Earth with no recollection about where he came from, who he is, or what he’s doing here. From here we depart on our six issue mini-series, where Longshot comes in contact with Ricochet Rita, a stunt-woman who Longshot meets along the way, has run-ins with She-Hulk and Spider-Man, teams up with Doctor Strange and meets a whole cast of people all in an effort for him to reclaim his memory. He has his share of obstacles along the way, including demons who came with him through the portal to Earth and want to get back home. They try to sacrifice a baby in the first issue which Longshot stops. It all turns out that Longshot was a slave of spineless ones, led by Mojo and his portal-opening slave Spiral, a six-armed woman warrior. Mojo ends up on Earth and wants to take that over and only Longshot can stop him.

-The Bottom Line- This is something that has really stood up well over time. There aren’t too many dated references and the story stands up well on its own. As Ann mentioned in the foreword, something like this mini may not even be made today due to the way it was written and made. I really enjoyed the journey that Longshot went on, from discovering his luck powers, his past, his telemetry, and even his morals and who is real friends are. The story can be confusing if you’re not paying attention but you do feel the confusion that Longshot is going through. Some of the appearances in issue #4 seemed forced but even from an early start Longshot and his cast of villains and allies was set. One of the best things on here that really help you understand the story on a deeper level are the original notes that Ann had on the character. Throw in some great original sketches from Arthur Adams and you have a really good collection well worth the $20 price tag. Longshot was a unique story, and it still stands up to the tests of time, a hero who doesn’t know who he is and trying to find himself and along the way shows what a hero he is.
