Wednesday Comics #7
-Batman- Batman definitely picks up from a slow week last week. Batman roughs up the shooter from issue one and gets the name of the man who set this up, Carlton Glass. Someone is killed at the end of the issue, too. The mystery deepens and I am appreciating this more and more. 1/1.
-Kamandi- This issue slows down a bit but just to set up some story points. The woman can’t speak Kamandi’s language but we learn her name is Ororo. Kamandi, Ororo and Canus drive out to find Tuftan and find all the tiger army has been decimated and Tuftan is in danger. I said this issue slowed down a bit but that means it didn’t bring the awesome. 2/2.
-Superman- I finally read a Wednesday Comics that features a Superman story I can get into. Supes is attacked by one of the super-strong aliens and while he’s getting his ass handed to him he has a thought about Ma and Pa Kent. The alien must have some sort of telepathy (d’uh, since Supes has been hearing the thoughts in his mind!) and flies off towards Superman’s adoptive parents. This brought action and a nice story development after 6 issues of what I thought was meandering around. 3/3.
-Deadman- Deadman is dead again and learns that the women he saw last issue are dead and the demon, Kalak, is torturing them before he plans on taking them down to hell with him. This is proving to be an enthralling story. 4/4.
-Green Lantern- Hal flies off and tries to fight off the alien that Dill became but is taken aback when yellow poison threatens Hal’s life. This appears like we’ll have a few battle issues here and I am looking forward to it. 5/5.
-Metamorpho- Metamorpho and the female version delve deeper into the cave where they meet the original Latin speaking Metamorpho. They need their chemical powers in order to reach the star of Atlantis. The pacing is really great here, with Gaiman making mention of Bond-level traps that they surpassed between this issue and the last. This is just a cool, off-beat, story, though it’s off-beat fun instead of the story that Strange Adventures is telling (off-beat odd). 6/6.
-Teen Titans- We continue the Wednesday Comics hot-streak with the Teen Titans regrouping in order to rescue Blue Beetle from this really evil Trident. Robin’s insecurities added an extra layer to this series. 7/7.
-Strange Adventures- Strange dreams about where his Zeta-Beam map could be and he’s assisted by Dr. Fate in finding where he hid the plans. He finds them and he’s ready to go back home. 8/8.
-Supergirl- Supergirl tries to get help from Aquaman but he basically tells her what a fool she was to contact him since he talks with fish and not mammals. She upset Supergirl so he leads her in the right direction (Dr. Midnight). I can take this for what it is, as an all-ages sort title that isn’t going against any sort of status quo but is just there to entertain. 9/9.
-Metal Men- A cop shoots at Chemo and he starts spewing forth his acidic contents. Platinum tries to save the cop but the acid is starting to wear away his metallic body and the Metal Men seem horribly outmatched now. This is progressing nicely. It’s like Supergirl in that it isn’t changing the status quo or anything but is just a pleasure to read. 10/10.
-Wonder Woman- The awesomeness continues here in these loaded stories. It’s amazing what can be fit in the one-page issue. Wonder Woman, who is trying to find the seven lost treasures of the Amazons, is able to retrieve a blood sword. There’s a lot to like here and is the most important issue in here in terms of character development that can be used in the regular DCU. 11/11.
-Sgt. Rock- Sgt. Rock is freed as the Easy Co. heads towards their inevitable reunion with Rock. There’s a cool scene of a man throwing the soldiers a potato and the war-weary soldiers thinking it is a grenade at first. Cool stuff from the Kuberts. 12/12.
-Flash- The Flash tries to save Iris again as another Flash is going on a date with Iris. We see that the Flash’s continued failures in the dozens of Flashes in one scene and this is affecting Barry Allen since his nose starts bleeding while he’s out with Iris. I love the time-travel stuff and how it is really mucking about with the Flash and his life now. 13/13.
-Demon & Catwoman- The witch-woman reverts Etrigan back to his human form and she plans on feasting on Catwoman so she can return to the mortal world and probably take it over. She releases her mental hold on Catwoman and Selina is not too happy. I am just really confused reading this. I guess I just don’t care about Demon and nothing here has made me care about him. This is really almost unreadable for me now. 13/14.
-Hawkman- Hawkman has saved the entire ship but one little girl has wandered away. Of course, the ship has crash-landed on Dinosaur Island of all places. Hawkman meets Jurassic Park? I’m all in for that! 14/15.
-The Bottom Line- Wow, after I complained about last week’s lackluster performance Wednesday Comics turned in its best issue yet. The hit rate was almost 1,000 and honestly almost all the stories had a great value in terms of readability. Let’s keep this action going as we head towards the conclusion of this mini-series.
