Batman Chronicles is already in its sixth volume (actually I think Volume 7 has already been released, I just haven’t read it yet) and I think the novelty of having all these early Batman titles may be wearing off on me. I got this when it first came out and it took a long time for me to finish. I finished the first half of the book and put it down for a couple of months before I actually got a chance to finish it. This collects Detective Comics #’s 62-65, Batman #’s 10 and 11, and World’s Finest Comics #’s 5 & 6, a span of four months in 1942 starting in April and heading to July. The United States had entered the War by this time, though none of these comics make any mention of the fact that a war was going on save for the covers of World’s Finest. There’s some good stories shoved in here, including a fair amount of Joker and Penguin stories and featuring other villains like Catwoman. The Joker was well on his way to becoming Batman’s number one villain and his stories were the stars of this series. Most of the issues were just silly crime stories with even sillier dialogue. This collection isn’t for everyone and I would think even the most hardcore Batman fans would have a tough time sitting through some of these stories. This would be good for the novelty of the early Batman titles, but for not much else.
