Misc. Reviews

Sorry this is a few days late. I’ve had so much going on right now it is not even funny. I’ll elaborate more in the Superstars post following this.

-Batman- There’s not much going on with this issue, a theme I found with a lot of titles this week. Batman finds the shooter from way back in issue #2 and gets shot at. I don’t have the issue in front of me right now but I don’t remember any word balloons. I love the art so this gets a point, though the story is moving a bit slowly right now. 1/1.

-Kamandi- Kamandi and the girl escape from the gorillas, they find Dr. Canus and head off to save Tuftan and Tuftan’s father. Another excellent issue. This story has managed through the first half to not only tell a complete tale each issue but keep the main story going. 2/2.

-Superman- Superman is now asleep at home when some aliens show up. There’s only one word balloon here. It’s a real shame that the weakest story in Wednesday Comics features the first super-hero of modern times. 2/3.

-Deadman- Deadman takes out the last monster before falling down a huge pit. The panel of him hitting the ground and the spear popping out of him was awesome. Deadman is dying again and when he awakens he sees the woman he couldn’t save. This is becoming quite awesome. 3/4.

-Green Lantern- Hal still remembers working with Dillon to become an astronaut and how Hal got kicked out of the program for pulling stupid stunt. He flies off to save Dillon. It’s more of the back-story between Dillon and Hal, which would work great in a single issue but sometimes makes it a little slow in a weekly single-page book like this. That being said, I really appreciate how we see why Hal is so anxious to save Dillon. 4/5.

-Metamorpho- Talk about slowing down a bit. More than two-thirds of this page is taken by a Metamorpho “Chutes and Ladders” type game, as well as the comic strip kids returning. Metamorpho and the Femetamorpho delve deeper into the pyramid or whatever and run into snakes. This is so odd and Allred’s art totally fits this story. 5/6.

-Teen Titans- It seems Blue Beetle is alive and well but must contend with a revived Triton. Triton wants revenge on the Titans for leading to the death of his father, Dr. Light. So he has a motive at least. I like this interpretation of Triton and how he’s taking it to the Titans. 6/7.

-Strange Adventures- The story starts picking up here. Adam is back home in New Mexico circa 1958 and wants to get back to Rann. He asks if it were all a dream but doesn’t know if it’s Rann Strange dreaming about Earth of vice-versa. That idea is like Descartes level philosophical. 7/8.

-Supergirl- Supergirl brings Streaky and Krypto to see a specialist, Aquaman. I don’t know why Supergirl would bring the terrain-based animals to someone who can only speak to fish and other water-dwelling animals instead of someone like Animal Man. And while I’m talking about the pets, I have to question Krypto’s name. Ok, Streaky I get, but naming your dog after your planet? If I ever get a dog he’s going to be named Eartho. The way Aquaman is written (a clam for a cell-phone) was really funny. 8/9.

-Metal Men- So the mad bomber’s bomb doesn’t go off thanks to Platinum but that just brings Chemo out to the party. Chemo is cool, the Metal men are cool, and DiDio is faring well with this story. 9/10.

-Wonder Woman- Wonder Woman encounters some traveler’s that need saving but she herself faces off against some unliving knights. Another great and full story. This is a great origin for Diana. 10/11.

-Sgt. Rock- So the Easy Co. help some hungry refugees as Sgt. Rock is freed by one of the Nazi’s for reasons unknown to us. I don’t know where to go with this. It’s moving the slowest of all the titles so far and really not too much has happened that can’t be summed up in one sentence. It seems the story isn’t really moving forward yet, though the release of Sgt. Rock is a nice change of pace. 11/12.

-Flash- Grodd heads back in time to take over the gorilla’s in a pre-historic age as a third Flash goes back in time to save himself and Iris. Iris is still not saved and now we have three Flashes running around. This is really cool, time-traveling, fun. How many Flashes will we end up with? 12/13.

-Demon & Catwoman- The Demon talks down a woman who will come back to Earth and take it over. If she’s not taking it over she plans on something evil. The Demon, who swore to Merlin something or other promises to stop her. My unfamiliarity with the Demon isn’t helping my enjoyment of this and unlike Deadman his character wasn’t really explained too well at the start of this series. 12/14.

-Hawkman- Hawkman helps the survivor’s out of the plane before it explodes. This has stalled out a bit, too, since Hawkman now has no wings, no one to fight, and no purpose right now. 12/15.

-The Bottom Line- This was a really weird issue of Wednesday Comics. After a really hot #5 it almost took a step back this week; the midway point of the book. A lot of the stories took a really slow turn (Batman, Superman, Hawkman, Demon), others stayed slow (Sgt. Rock, Green Lantern, Strange Adventures) while others are really rising above the pack (Kamandi, Deadman and Teen Titans). To me this took a bit of a fall from last week but there’s still a lot here to like and the good far outweighs what was bad about this issue.
