Wednesday Comics #5
-Batman- Batman is in the batcave working on this murder when Alfred stops by for a chat. Batman says he’s really focused on this mission and Alfred makes a comment that maybe Batman is too preoccupied right now. It’s an interesting twist but I have a gut feeling that maybe there is too much trying to be told here and I just don’t know if there’s enough space for it. I am still enjoying it and I think it’s a great way to start off the Wednesday Comics reading experience. 1/1.
-Kamandi- Kamandi, the girl and Tuftan are captured by the Gorillas and the grand gorilla says he will murder both Tuftan and his father while Kamandi and the girl will be slaves. You can imagine how Kamandi takes that news. I really like the novel-esque story-telling here. There are no word balloons and everything is in the word boxes like a book would be. 5 issues in and this is definitely the story I look most forward to. 2/2.
-Superman- Superman is home, finds the ship he arrived to Earth in and we get a recap of his origin. Was that really necessary? Is there ANYONE reading this who doesn’t know the basic idea of Superman? Seriously, what’s the point of this? 2/3.
-Deadman- Deadman battles some more demons and ends up getting impaled by the end of the issue. This had a lot of cool fighting panels and I actually feel like I know the character of Deadman now. 3/4.
-Green Lantern- As Hal heads off to help his friend, the astronaut, we look back on their relationship in astronaut training. Hal was young and brash at the time and regrets his competitive demeanor towards the older and more demure Dillon. I really like how Busiek is building this relationship between the two before getting to Hal saving him (if he can). 4/5.
-Metamorpho- The Metamorpho’s delve deeper into the cave for the Star of Atlantis diamond but make a quick stop to save Stagg’s group of chef’s from a Sodium Chloride attack. Yeah, Stagg brings his chef’s with him on adventures. How kooky is that? This is strange, bizarre fun. 5/6.
-Teen Titans- The Titans deal with the loss of the Blue Beetle as the nurse who hates super-heroes starts coming around to them and how they have to deal with loss like she did when she lost her father. In this great Trident fight we have a very human story. This may be my second favorite title on here. 6/7.
-Strange Adventures- We again focus on Alanna heading for cover and escaping the evil aliens. She wonders how Strange is doing. I do too. Strange hasn’t been in here the last two weeks. It’s Paul Pope so if you like you like him and if you don’t you probably never will. I’m a fan of Pope and his work so this was alright for me. 7/8.
-Supergirl- Supergirl saves the falling plane that was destroyed because of Streaky and she’s shocked by the two super-pets’ behavior. She thinks it is time for them to go to the vet. I wonder if it will be a super–vet? Maybe he’ll give them a kryptonite collar? It’s an all-ages title mixed into the Wednesday Comics and is a call back to the type of things you would see in the Sunday funnies. 8/9.
-Metal Men- The mad bomber was actually an associate of Magnus and it seems like he’s just jealous. JEALOUS ENOUGH TO BLOW EVERYTHING UP! Green-eyed monster and all that stuff. The villain may be a little lame but there’s nothing wrong with this story. We have our antagonist, protagonist and a conflict. You know, if I keep talking about it like this I’ll end up like Stewie describing Brian’s book. 9/10.
-Wonder Woman- This story is becoming one of the better Wonder Woman stories ever. She’s still on her dream-quest and the recovery of the seven stars of the Amazons. This time she is at first tricked by a woman to steal the crown but learns that the woman was evil. She tries stopping her but fails. She later is told by the crown’s guardian that she completed her mission and that is the origin of her tiara. This is a great prequel story for Wonder Woman and how she became the great warrior she is with the tools she had. This may be the most important of the stories in terms of lasting impact. 10/11.
-Sgt. Rock- Sgt. Rock is about to be killed but the Nazi gun jams. Easy Co. is still in a cave somewhere. This is certainly taking its time to develop. I just got through reading Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commando’s so I am on a WWII high now and that’s probably why this is getting a point. 11/12.
-Flash- Grodd captures one of the Flashes to harness his speed force as another one is dropped somewhere in the galaxy. Meanwhile, a third Flash is telling Iris he will pay more attention to her. There’s a bunch of Flashes here and it’s making for an interesting tale. 12/13.
-Demon & Catwoman- Okay now we are getting somewhere. The Demon meets the woman who made Catwoman a cat and she plans on using that to bring her back to life. This is finally getting interesting and understandable but hey, better late than never. 13/14.
-Hawkman- Hawkman tries his best to stop the plane. He tries landing it in the ocean but it bounces onto land. There are some great illustrations here and the pacing is really quick. It’s also a great way to end the issue. For some reason it just fits. 14/15.
-The Bottom Line- Fourteen out of fifteen is the best score yet and really this title is getting better. All the stories are hitting their groove and as we head to the middle issue. This has been the best issue yet.
