Mephisto Vs. collects a four-issue mini-series released from April to July of 1987. It was written by Al Milgrom and penciled by John Buscema. The four issues each featured a different foe for Mephisto, starting with the Fantastic Four and moving onto X-Factor and onto the X-Men and finally the Avengers. Mephisto is like a real collector here, wanting to trade up in the soul-trading process (from a human in the Invisible Woman to a mutant in Jean Grey to a mutant who can steal powers in Rogue to a god in Thor) and talking about them being in “mint” condition and sealing them in mylar. Those little nods to collector’s aside, the final issue really lays out the meat of the series: Mephisto did all this, and failed, so that Hera can one day bring Thor into her realm and cause major disruption there.

-The Bottom Line- I never read these issues before and I did have a fun time reading them. The whole wink to collector’s, or just the blatant mocking of them, was something I enjoy reading. The mini also shows Mephisto as an ultimate manipulator, something you’d expect out of the Devil. We have some decent extras, too, including the Handbook profile of Mephisto and a Marvel Age article about the mini-series. However, the actual mini-series has an Overstreet value of $12 combined while this hardcover is $20. Even if you tossed in that Marvel Age and Handbook comic that each appeared, it would bring the value to still under $20. What’s good about these collections is the ease of acquiring them. Certainly there are no extra shipping fees to pay if you ordered this as opposed to getting the comics. I wish these had some more substance to them, namely an introduction, since I can usually get through these collections pretty quickly. I’d say this is a mild recommendation based on the price, but recommended based on the story.
