Masterworks Time!
March 20th, 2010

It feels like so long since I've posted on here. Maybe it's because I don't have much to say. There are no sports going on that I really care about right now (the Rangers are out of it and they're done and it is way too early for baseball). I guess there's the NCAA Tournament going on. I have a couple of brackets but it's too early to really see how I'm gonna do. Georgetown losing hurt me, but it also hurt a lot of other people. I'll see how things look after the second round. I am in the fantasy basketball playoffs now and I went in as the 5th seed. I have a shot at getting past the first round but right now it's tied up at 6-6 and he has more guys going than I do so I don't think I'll make it to the next round. The only thing I need is to win assists and I'm in. Of course, I've won assists EVERY WEEK of the season save one so if I get eliminated because of that I guess it would be ironic. For the record, I'm losing by 2 assists right now and 2 steals. The other categories aren't really in doubt so it'll come down to the weekend. Fantasy Hockey is ending and it looks like I'll have a bye in both of the leagues I'm in but I am really limping into the playoffs so I'm not too confident. Anyway, getting back to the real world of reviews, I have a new Marvel Masterworks collection reviewed up on my website and it is Atlas Era Black Knight & Yellow Claw Vol. 1. It's a really cool collection and it's worth checking out.

Shrek 3
March 21st, 2010

Well we've come to the end of another weekend. This was a good one for me. On Saturday I was able to make it to Long Beach and run on the boardwalk (8.4 miles!) as I train for the half-marathon which is 5 weeks from now. I went to Rt 110 afterwards for a relaxing evening before coming home. I also finished another DVD review that day and started the Hulk Ultimate Anthology. I really just wanted to finish another one quickly and I've reviewed more than half the matches already so it was a quick C&P job.

Today was good, too. I got to the gym for some weight-work and generally relaxed. I'm currently watching Biggest Loser from Tuesday and I'm currently following the NBA games. It's the first round of the Fantasy Playoffs and I am clinging to a 7-5 lead. However, the FG% is only 5 thousandths away right now and it's anyone's game. I'm the lower seed here so it would be an upset for me to move on. I've only made it to the Finals of all three fantasy leagues I've been in at work so I want to make it to the next round and hopefully get past the favorite (and my nemesis - we've played in the playoffs all three times) to get to the finals.

That's all on my mind right now. I do have a DVD review ready. It's an old one that I just recently purchased on the cheap and it is Shrek 3. Fans of the first two will definitely appreciate it. This week I have a Monday TV Round-up (two new episodes of Family Guy and Cleveland Show - which were both pretty bad), Tuesday will be TPL (almost done - books are read and it'll be done tomorrow), Thursday will be WWE Superstars and possibly even the WWE Classics.com content for the month, Saturday will be a trade review and Sunday will see a DC Animated DVD review posted! That's it!

2010 TV Round-Up Part 10

Cleveland Show 03/21/10
Episode 14: Once Upon a Tyne in New York
Cleveland realizes he needs to take Donna on a romantic trip and they never did take a honeymoon. So he takes her to New York City! There’s only one catch – everyone comes along. I mean everyone, even Coach. He wants to win back Tyne Daly’s heart. Yeah, I know who the hell is Tyne Daly? So Cleveland spends most of the time not with Donna but getting his friends out of trouble and Donna’s not too happy about that. They do team up to help Coach and while helping him with a teleprompter they rekindle the spark between them. The kids stowaway to New York and make it to MTV but that story is ultimately fruitless. Tyne appears as Hulk as the end, too, making this whole episode pointless. There were way too many clichéd New York things here and even worse – it just wasn’t funny. Cleveland has put out two weak episodes in a row and the early momentum of the show has definitely slowed. B-.

Family Guy 03/21/10

Episode 14: Peter-assment
So we start off with a little bit of touchy subject for some people – Terry Schaivo The Musical. Stewie’s on stage as the plug and has stage fright but that is completely forgotten immediately after it happens. That’s because Peter is taping him and suddenly finds Richard Dreyfus in the audience. Peter follows him and sends the tape to TMZ. This causes him to buy a camera and follow people around. He soon gets slugged in the face by Ollie Williams and his glasses break. That entire first act was just lead-in to the final two acts. Peter goes to work with his contacts and his boss starts coming on to Peter! Peter cries foul but no one believes a guy can be harassed by a woman. It all comes to a head when Peter is at his boss’ place and he refuses to have sex with her. He’s fired but he is later inspired by some old movie to get revenge by back-handing her in the face. He shows up at her place but instead of hitting her he saves her life from a suicide attempt! Really his boss is just looking for affection from someone. So Peter pretends to be someone else and wines and dines her before doing the deed and giving her what she wants. She knew it was Peter all along but don’t worry, he didn’t cheat on his wife, he had Mort inside his pants and shirt to do the act. This was just a flat episode and I didn’t laugh at all. It just missed everywhere, from the tasteless opening (though Stewie peeing himself was the lone bright spot) to the crappy story. C.

A Whole Lotta Reviews!
March 28th, 2010

I can't believe it's been since Tuesday since I posted on here! I actually had the most recent Superstars episode ready for Thursday and the Saturday review ready but I guess I just didn't update Live Journal to reflect that. It's not even that I've been busy I guess just lazy. I was preoccupied this week with the Fantasy Basketball Playoffs. I managed to sneak by the first round (where I was the 5th seed) and had the tough task of battling the #1 seed who was number one basically the whole year. Right now it's actually tied 6-6 (though I led most of the week) and I have 9 more guys going tonight to his 6. Just looking at the numbers I would hope I could win (I'm only down 5 rebounds and 14 assists right now) but there are a lot of close stats (I'm up by 20 points and 5 three pointers) so if any of his guys have big nights I could be done. I'll let you know how I do.

Anyway, I mentioned the WWE Superstars review that would've been posted on Thursday. Well, I have the September 28th, 1991 episode posted! As an extra bonus I JUST finished the October 5th, 1991 episode that was posted on Thursday. See, there were 5 Mondays this month and for the fifth Monday they just added the episodic TV and they updated early to throw on some Wrestlemania Matches. Since I'm feeling generous, and since the themed matches have all been posted, I even posted the March 2010 WWE Classics.com wrestling reviews, too! This months theme was 1985 and there was some awesome and rare stuff thrown in. You want awesome? How about TWO Dynamite Kid matches and an awesome Flair/Anderson match. You want rare? How about the WWE Debut of Ricky Steamboat and the wrestling debut of Lex Luger! This service has not failed to impress.

I also have the weekly trade reviewed and this TPB is the Green Lantern Chronicles Vol. 2. The Blackest Night event (and the Sinestro Corps for that matter) have really made me appreciate the Green Lantern a bit more and I've had a blast reading the two Chronicles of his that have been released. Finally I have to post the DVD review that I customarily do on Sundays. Since it's comic related it fits in well in this paragraph. It is the newest DC Animated Film: Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths. It was a good DVD and I recommend checking out the review.

I don't have much more to add. I have to really keep an eye out on the Basketball tonight. I also have the second round of Hockey starting tomorrow (I had a bye in both leagues I was in - I was first place in both!) and I made a pretty clutch move today to ensure I win faceoffs this week. However, the league I care about I have two bad injuries to my stars - Malkin and Thornton, which I hope clears up soon. In terms of reviews, be back here tomorrow for the Animation Domination episodes (Family Guy and Cleveland Show). Tuesday's TPL is already done, and I think I will have nothing really ready until Saturday or Sunday when a new trade and DVD review will be posted. I have to finish another DVD review soon because the one that will posted this week is the last one I have completed! I need to stay on top of it to have something every week!

2010 TV Round-Up Part 11
March 29th, 2010

Cleveland Show 03/28/10
Episode 15: Brown Knight
Cleveland has to deal with a very pushy Roberta. It gets even worse when Donna battles a thief and Cleveland is shot. Cleveland is hailed as a hero once he came back to the bar. He’s even invited to be on Dan Rather’s morning show, “Rather Early” where they show clips of Cleveland being a coward. Cleveland vows to get Loretta’s ring back and we start a little 24 homage. Meanwhile, Roberta sees a new pair of Kardashian jeans and wants them. Raulo thinks Roberta is dying because she has her period and wants to get her the jeans. He does but he finds out he’s been played and sells all her things to get the money back. Donna still saves him but she shoots him and makes up a story that makes Cleveland look like a hero. This was a fun episode. There wasn’t anything that was laugh-out-loud funny but it delivered in its main story. B.

Family Guy 03/28/10
Episode 15: Brian Griffin’s House of Payne
We start with a funny opening – Stewie in space (quoting Rocket Man) and it’s a cool 3D thing. I can’t tell what it is referencing though. This leads to Stewie bothering Peter and Peter sending Stewie in the basement. Stewie finds a box of Brian’s stuff, including his first screenplay. Brian tries to get Lois to read it but she’s not too enthused with the idea. She does read it eventually and actually likes it and gets Brian a pilot on CBS! They have an audition with Elijah Wood and everything is great until James Woods shows up! The guys want him and there’s a great add-on where James talks about hitting, “some homo’s Prius” which true fans of the show know is Brian’s car. The show is completely changed, much to Brian’s dismay. Brian goes along with it once it was picked up for 22 episodes. Brian realizes he sold out and quits. Chris steals Meg’s diary and while she chases Chris Stewie is knocked down the stairs and suffers a sick injury. They try to hide it from Lois but Stewie doesn’t get any better. Peter finds out and tosses Stewie under Lois’ car which leads to the funny twist that she wants to cover it up, too! I loved how the Brian story really had nice bits of continuity, almost like a real TV show with references to past episodes. The Stewie sub-plot was just wrong but in a funny way. A-.
