WCW Saturday Night
June 3rd, 2010

Tonight you guys are in for a real treat. WWEClassics.com has decided to add another show to its weekly update schedule and that show is none other than WCW Saturday Night! It's the first non-WWE show they have offered and I'm pumped to start watching it. The guys started with the September 16th, 1995 episode so that's where my reviews will start. Luckily this is airing on opposite weeks of Superstars so that will give me something new on here every week. Now I know that the Classics.com team is going through some changes (Raw from 1993 and 1994 have been taken off, as have all ECW stuff and they don't post on the message boards anymore) but as long as they deliver every week I will be a happy subscriber.

Changing gears for a bit I have to mention the big news coming out of the baseball world the past few days and that is Armando Gallaraga's Perfect Game that never was because of Umpire James Joyce botched call. When I first heard about it and saw it on MLB Network I immediately thought that Armando was robbed and the call should be reversed. I think that having 24 hours to think about it has changed my opinion. First off, I have to say that Joyce did the right thing in admitting his mistake. He really thought that the guy was safe and when he saw the replay he knew he was wrong. I think that even though Armando was robbed the call should stand and the call should not be reversed. First if that happens think of all the other games that you'd have to overturn as well. Why just this game? It'd open up a Pandora's Box that MLB does not want to touch. Second - what's the point? Just to put the guy in the history books? His moment of having pitched the perfect game and consequent celebration is forever lost and there's no way you can regain that magic. It was a bad call but it is one that will have to stand and this will go down in the annals of history as the Imperfect Game that led to the birth of more instant replay in the MLB.

Starrcade and the World Cup
June 15th, 2010

Although I've posted on here frequently through things like TPL, trade reviews and the weekly wrestling shows; it has been awhile since I actually posted what could be defined as a blog entry. I'm sorry for that. I don't have any excuses other than the normal ones (busy and such). It's been like three weeks since I've done a DVD review and with summer quickly approaching (I only have about 6 more days of work) that is something that will be rectified. I'm gonna try and finish two a week so I'll have enough reviews ready for the rest of the year. Another thing I'm going to try and do is 2 trade reviews a week, again to build a backlog so that I can post every week on here. With my extra time I also plan on watching more of the shows and PPV's that Classics.com has to offer. I already review WCW Saturday Night and WWE Superstars every week but with a little more added time during the summer I plan on knocking out all the PPV's they post monthly, all the videos I'm interested in for the theme, and maybe some other TV shows. The first item of my new reviewing schedule has been realized today. I just finished WCW Starrcade 1992 - the PPV posted this month. it ties in with the month's theme of tag teams and check out the review to see why.

The only sports thing I have to talk about right now is the World Cup. I am not a huge soccer fan but I'll watch it when it is on and surprisingly, I've seen almost every game so far. Italy and Paraguay are on right now and Paraguay has a surprising 1-0 lead. I'm in a little pool with some friends at work to pick the winner's of each game and, of course, I'm in last place already!!!! There've been some good games. The one I was most interested in was the USA/England game and I'm so happy the US was able to pull off the tie - especially with scoring that really weak goal to equalize things. I can only imagine what fans in England are thinking when Green let in that gimme. I just hope the US can keep this momentum going, get into the second round and then go from there. The Germany game was exciting because of the four-goals they scored and I am looking forward to watching Brazil and Spain over the next few days. I know Spain is the favorite but I will wait until I see all teams play to make my predictions. The teams that impressed me the most so far was Argentina and I think Maradona as coach is something that works. They seem like an exciting team and Messi was having his way out there. They only won 1-0 but it easily could've been 4-0.

Sunday Blog Returns!
June 27th, 2010

I have officially started my summer vacation as of Thursday at 11:00am and even though I've been off only 1 working day I feel like I've been so productive already! I know that the blog has been lacking DVD reviews lately and I am going to work this summer to rectify that. I'm working my way through the Iron Man Animated Series DVD (that should be up next week) and I'm really going to try to bang out two DVD reviews a week, as well as two trade reviews a week to make sure I have tons of material throughout the rest of the year once school starts up again. I don't know why I mentioned that, I don't want to think about that yet!!!! That will go along with the regular weekly reviews I do (WWEClassics.com and TPL).

Even though Thursday was my last day I haven't actually had to teach classes since the second week of June. That's given me free time to watch the big sporting event of the summer - The World Cup. I've been impressed with a few teams and since we're into the knock-out round I'll just give some quick comments. The USA disappointed as usual and I don't care who says the team was successful getting into the KO Round the truth is they should've beat Ghana. They started poorly and it killed them. They just can't start off a game (or even a stoppage time it seems) strongly and that's why they are on the plane ride home. I was surprised at how badly England, France and Italy played though France had it coming. I guess the soccer gods figured they'd do terribly because of how they got into the Cup. So Europe as a whole has been disappointing for me (how does Spain lose its first game). South America on the other hand has been killer. Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and even Chile have played well and I think a South American team is going to take it this year. I have my money on Argentina right now. We'll see how that plays out.

The other big sport that kicks off the summer is Wimbledon. I'm a huge tennis fan and I've been watching this a lot, too. There hasn't been too many surprises so far. Roger was tested in the first two rounds and Rafa doesn't seem to be playing his best tennis but those who people expected to be playing the second week are. I think that both sides are wide open in terms of who'll win. I think it'll be a Williams sister that takes it but I'd love to see Kim Clijsters do some damage, too. Federer is always a favorite but I have a feeling he won't be repeating. Roddick is a sleeper pick and even Andy Murray - who isn't feeling the pressure yet - could pull off a big win. The biggest match of the year so far took place in the first round and it was the Mahut/Isner match. It started off well enough with the two trading sets. As darkness closed in they held off on the fifth set until the next day. Who knew what would transpire. In Wimby you have to win by two sets in the final frame and there is no tiebreak. That means you could have games going 10, 20, or 30 sets, like last year's final. The two started and neither refused to be broken. I turned on the TV and saw it was tied at 26-26 and I couldn't believe it. I had to literally rub my eyes and make sure I wasn't seeing things. I had to watch the rest. I couldn't have predicted that they would need a THIRD day to finish this match and when Isner finally broke Mahut in the 138th game he had finished the longest match in history with a final set victory of 70-68. The records they broke were countless. Both men had more aces in that last set alone than ever before in history. That last set was longer than any other MATCH ever played and when it was all said and done it took over 11 hours to complete. Both men were honored immediately following the match and I'm happy to say I watched this historic match and I think it will be a feat that will never be matched. Unfortunately, Isner was so depleted he lost his next game badly, winning only 5 games the whole match.

I guess I should end with some reviews! I have the monthly theme from WWEClassics.com and this month was Tag Team Titans. The first three weeks were okay but the last week really redeemed the whole month. There was also a special program available called Strangest Tag Teams and that's been reviewed for your reading pleasure, too. That's all I have for now. I'll see you back here on Tuesday for TPL.
