WWE Superstars 04/27/91
September 2nd, 2009

I have a very good reason for this being late.

You see, school starts in a couple of days and this summer was the summer I was going to get a lot of housework done. Well, I did, but unfortunately the painting I need to get done is going to be crunched into these last few days before the vacation ends. I have been slaving away at painting my living room and dining room (as well as master bedroom) so I can finally move furniture back into those rooms and get my kitchen back. It's been a couple of long and hard weeks. The good news is that the painting is almost done in those three rooms and they will be done by Monday (the day before work) and the first week will be hectic but the house will be relatively back to normal by next week.

Although the week has been stressful I was able to attend the US Open on Monday Morning Session and saw some great action. I was able to see Federer, Serena, Kim Clisjters (who I saw win the whole thing in 2005), Isner, Blake, Hantuchova, Pennetta, Mauresmo and a bunch of others. My wife and I had so much fun and next year we went to get one of the passes for the whole event.

Well, I guess I better go but not before fulfilling my Thursday obligations of the latest WWE Superstars episode. It's done and check out my review of the April 27th, 1991 show.

US Open Upset Weekend
September 6th, 2009

As you may or may not know, I am a huge Tennis fan. This weekend we had some amazing US Open action. You know, slight tangent here but I never gave my predictions. For men, it is Federer's tourney to lose but I like Murray and Nadal, too. For the women it is all Serena's. I thought Safina may give it a challenge but that isn't to be. Speaking of Safina, the World Number One was dispatched in 3 sets by Kvitova. Afterwards she complained about going on late and changing stadiums but it's really just sour grapes. Her half of the draw is completely wide open now, with really only Kuznetsova being a name player. Safina is on shaky ground and like the other #1's who haven't won a major (like Jankovic and earlier Ivanovic), she can't seem to handle the pressure. The women's draw is really wide open in general, with upsets like Oudin over Sharapova and even Jankovic and Ivanovic bowing out early.

The men have been really solid, with all the top 16 men advancing to the 3rd round for the first time EVER. Think about how many hundreds of years that includes, the 129 years of the US open, the 100+ years of Wimbledon plus the French and the Australian. That's amazing. Of course, as soon as that happens we have one of the favorites, Andy Roddick, getting upset by spunky American John Isner. I saw Isner play live and this guy is the real deal. I honestly wasn't too suprised he was able to defeat Roddick. He's a towering man (6'9) with a HUGE serve and he's gonna be trouble for whomever he plays.

I was also really happy to see Clijsters defeat Venus in one of the waciest matches I've seen. Clijsters pitched a shut out in the first match and that was reciprocated by Venus in the second. Kim was able to break Venus early in the third and held serve to complete the upset. I saw Kim win the US Open in 2005 (where she ironically beat Venus en route to her first and so far only Grand Slam title) and I was able to see her on opening day and it was just a pleasure to see her take down Venus. Kim is just a likeable player. I hope she'll be able to win it all (though she'll have to get through Serena to do it) but I think Kim has exceeded her expectations so far.

Like I've mentioned a few days ago, I've been really busy painting and I wanted to finish it before school started. Well, today my wife and I put the finishes touches on the rooms we NEEDED to finish before school and I have to say it looks pretty damn good. Tomorrow we'll be moving furniture back into said rooms and we'll finally have our kitchen back, finally be able to sleep in our own homes, and finally have a functioning house again. And all the day before school starts. That should ease some of the back to school stress.

To end this whole thing I guess I should get to the DVD review for the week. I'm lucky I have a few reviews saved since I actually have only finished two DVD reviews in August thanks to my busy schedule. Hopefully I'll be back to a one per week pace when September kicks in. Anyway, this week you get a long review, the 5-Wrestlemania's collected in WWE: Wrestlemania Anthology Vol. II. Well, I don't have much more to say so I guess we'll call it a week. Enjoy your Labor Day!

WWE Superstars 05/04/91
September 10th, 2009

Well another Thursday has come and it is time once again for the most recent WWE Superstars episode to be posted onto the website. This week I viewed the May 4th, 1991 episode. Can the WWE keep its string of great episodes going? Check the review and find out! In other WWE news I am almost finished with the Canadian Stampede review and that will be posted right here next week.

Other than that all is calm. I do want to point out that tomorrow is the 8th anniversary of the September 11th, terrorist attacks and it doesn't really get any easier to deal with it. I mean, I live in New York and I was only a few miles from the Twin Towers (which I saw on my way home from work everday) and I think about it all the time on the way home when I see an empty space where the Twin Towers should be.

US Open Wild Weekend
September 13th, 2009

While last week I spoke about upset weekend the only way to describe this weekend was wild. The rain really messed up the scheduling, postponing the Nadal/Gonzalez quarterfinal match, the women's semi-final and the men's semi-finals. Well, after Friday was rained out Nadal was able to brush aside Gonzalez in the completion of their match. Wozniacki shrugged off Wickmayer in straight sets and Clijsters beat Serene in one of the weirdest finishes you'll ever see in tennis. With Clijsters up 6-5 in the second set and Serena serving at 15-30 Serena was called for a foot fault. Now, I've watched a lot of tennis and haven't seen any of those called but Serena's been called for three of them just in the US Open. Serena literally exploded and chastised the line judge in a way that would make John McEnroe blush. Since Serena received a warning earlier for smashing her racket this verbal abuse cost her a point and since it was match point she lost the match. Clijsters was just shocked at this turn of events. Personally I think Serena behaved like a little brat and she should've issued the poor line judge an apology. She hasn't, yet., and she may be in risk of being defaulted for the rest of the tournament, which means her doubles final match with her sister would be forfeited. She was fined $10,000 but that's nothing for someone as rich as her.

Once the men's semifinals started we saw a down and out and injured Nadal fall to Del Potro in straight sets. I really like Nadal but he's been bothered by something and he's just too young to start with the injuries. I really am scared about how the rest of his career will pan out, since the type of game he plays is very tough on the body. I just hope he can stay in good health and challenge Federer's Grand Slam record. Speaking of R-Fed, he beat Djokovic in straight sets to set up a Del Potro/Federer final. The crazy thing about the Federer match is that Djokovic played one hell of a game but had no answer to Federer's greatness. It was close straight sets match (7-6, 7-5, 7-5) but man, Fed is in the zone right now. The penultimate shot (a shot between the legs while running towards the ball and Fed's back to net) that went for a winner was just insane. I look forward to the final tomorrow and I predict Federer will add Grand Slam title #16 to his shelf.

The women's final of Wozniacki vs. Clijsters was one that I am sure NO ONE predicted, especially since Kim was a wild card but that's what we have. Each player is very likeable but I think Kim was the sentimental favorite. She hasn't lost at the US Open since 2004, winnning in 2005 in her last appearance there, and she hoped her streak could continue tonight. Unbelievably; it did. Clijsters closed out Wozniacki in straight sets (7-5, 6-3) to cap off one of the most incredible tournaments ever. Kim has been one of my favorite players and to see her fight hard the whole tournament, beat BOTH Williams' sisters and take out a feisty Wozniacki to win the title was amazing. This may be one of the most memorable US Opens of this decade. Kim's kid was just adorable, too. What a great finish. I joked before about this to my wife but now both Kim and Federer have been undefeated in the US Open dating back to 2005. What a great return for Kim and I can only hope she continues her great play and re-enter the upper part of the rankings where disappointments like Safina, Jankovic and Ivanovic reside.

Well, with all that US Open coverage I almost forgot this week's DVD review! That wouldn't be a bad thing because I only have three DVD' reviews left to post and with time being very hard to come by with school started I hope I can keep up a pace of one DVD a week! I think double posting at times in the summer may come back to hurt me. Anyway, this week is the debut of Full House Season 4 onto the website. I finished this on August 3rd and since then I have only completed three other reviews. I am only one hour into a 9-hour collection so I doubt it'll be done by the end of the week but I really hope so. That's all I have for now, check back on Tuesday for TPL!
