Poisoned and Fireproofed
May 17th, 2009

This week's two DVD premieres couldn't be further apart in terms of content. Just a little history, both of these reviews were finished towards the end of February and were finished on consecutive days. First up is a WWE review focusing on perhaps the most conflicted man in the business, Jake Roberts. The DVD, called Jake Roberts: Pick Your Poison, is an honest look at the career and more interestingly, the tormented life of Jake Roberts.

The second DVD is a religious film that I originally caught in the theaters and was a very touching film, I thought. It is called Fireproof and no matter what your religious viewpoints are, it is a movie with a great message.

That's it for this week's DVD reviews. I still have a baker's dozen left to post, so expect another two-fer next week. Actually, I will be in Washington DC next week at this time (I'm going Saturday-Monday) so I will either try and post that Friday or when I get home on Monday night. Also look for the American Dad/Family Guy DVD review tomorrow evening, too.

One thing I would like to talk about today was the Federer/Nadal tennis match at the Madrid Open Finals. In a surprising result, Federer beat Nadal in straight sets and looked impressive doing it. It's the week before the French Open and Federer delivered a message to his biggest rival. Could this be the year that Federer finally wins that elusive French Open and capture the career Grand Slam AND tie Samrpas' record? I think some of the credit for Federer's win belongs to Novak Djokovic. Djokovic pushed Nadal to the limit the night before in one of the best games I have ever seen on clay. It was an epic back and forth match-up and had it been the finals of the French Open people would be talking about in hushed tones, revering it and claiming it to be one of the best matches ever. I am pumped for the French Open.

Season Finales

Family Guy 05/17/09
Episode 16: Peter’s Progress
Cleveland’s cousin from Jamaica comes to Quahog and reads the past lives of the gang. Peter was a guy from England named Griffin Peterson who had a thing for their version of Lois (Lady Redbush) but King Stewie wants her. He sends Griffin to the US where he creates Quahog. Eventually Lois comes back to him which brings Stewie over. A talent show decides where Lois will stay. Chris, Brian and Meg all appear here in various forms and this was a dud of an episode if I ever saw one. I chuckled maybe three times if that. This wasn’t funny, it wasn’t original, and even the musical number was weak. What a bad way to end the season. D.

American Dad 05/17/09
Episode 20: Stan’s Night Out
Stan spends a night out with his friends and it ends badly when his friends hit another man’s car and knock him out and take him hostage. This leads to a wild night of people getting knocked out by Stan’s friends, including the cheating wife of one, a cop, and a guy whose car they hit. Stan is further scandalized by hookers being brought to their office and their car being stolen with the people in the back. So they end up at the home of a terrible, murdering, drug dealer. We don’t see how that turns out but we know Stan got out of it alright. Sometimes it’s not about how it ends; it’s about how you get there. The b-story sees Roger and Hayley try and see who is more attractive to the guys and Roger wins! Unfortunately, he finds out it is a “pig party,” where only the girls meet. So he brings Hayley there to try and win the contest for bringing the ugliest girl. That was a funny ending to that storyline. The ending to the main story was just hysterical, too. Another solid episode from American Dad, and another B+ to end the season on a high note.

A Hulk Review for the Holiday Weekend
May 22nd, 2009

It is Memorial Day weekend which is really the unofficial start of the summer season. I say unofficial since the summer solstice isn't until late June but I'm not here to talk about all the solstice's. Memorial Day is also a mark that the school year is quickly approaching its end and I can't wait for the final day of classes that is only a few weeks away.

Anyway, I mentioned that I wasn't going to be here this weekend ( I will be in DC Saturday-Monday) so I wanted to take time out of my day today to post. Luckily, I had Thursday and Friday off, making a very nice and relaxing 5-day weekend. Ha, sorry to brag about that (not really). So since I was away I wanted to get a DVD review up here. This week I present: Hulk Vs. This was finished on the first day of March, so I am slowly but surely getting up to date with these things.

I don't have too much else to say. There was a crazy NHL game last night with the Canes and Pens combining for 11 goals. Who said that defense wins games in playoff hockey? That was just a wild game. I mean, 7-4? You gotta be kidding me.

Enjoy the Memorial Day Weekend!

Stanley Cup Finals Preview
May 29th, 2009

Sorry for the lack of updates this week, but I had a full week. I got back from my trip to Washington DC on Monday night, then two full days of work on Tuesday and Wednesday (didn't get home until 5pm!) and then trips to the gym and a dinner event those nights meant no time for reviews. Thursday was another long trip to the gym and no time for reviews (again). Well, it is Friday and I finally have time to relax. I finished two graphic novel reviews of books I read on the bus trip to DC, as well as polishing up the first disc of the American Dad DVD, and finally doin the NHL preview below. Well, check back on Sunday for more DVD reviews, and I will try for another Superstars review by this weekend as well.

Stanley Cup Finals
(2) Detroit vs. (4) Pittsburgh
It’s the rematch that I guess many have been waiting for. It’s the first time that two teams have met in the finals in consecutive years since 1983 and 1984. If you don’t know about NHL history, the New York Islanders swept the upstart Edmonton Oilers in 1983 to win their fourth Stanley Cup in a row and that really showed the Oilers what they need to do to win. Taking from that experience, the Oilers won the 1984 Stanley Cup Finals in 5 games. Could history repeat itself here? Could the Penguins use the knowledge of last year’s loss to defeat the ones who eliminated them last year and overcome that hump and bring the Stanley Cup back to Pittsburgh for the first time in 17 years? I don’t think so. I think the Red Wings are just too good and they have rebuilt their team from last year. They added one of the Pens big guns, Marion Hossa, to their line-up and that addition is bigger than anything the Penguins did. The Pens have Crosby and Malkin, but the Wings are just too deep as a team to fall prey to the Pens. It will be close, closer than last year I think, but we’ll see the Red Wings hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup for a second year in a row.
Prediction: Detroit in Seven

Are you kidding me?
May 31st, 2009

I can't believe it. Rafael Nadal actually lost in the French Open to Robin Soderling of all people. I was just shocked that the unbeatable Rafa has been knocked off and won't win the French Open this year. This really clears the way for Roger Federer now. He's never won at France and it is the only title he's missing to complete his career Grand Slam. Not only that, but should he win here he will tie Pete Sampras' record for most Grand Slam titles with 14. I really don't see anyone standing in Roger's way now, with Haas and Andy Roddick on the horizon, and a probable showdown with Andy Murray in the final. This could be Roger's year, and he could break the record with a win at Wimbeldon or the US Open, both courts where he dominates.

I am still in shock as I start the second paragraph. I must bypass this shock and head into the DVD review portion of this post. What I have for you today is a movie review and another three-disc WWE review. The movie review is a film that was released on DVD a while ago but one I didn't buy until recently and of course it is a comic book film. It is X-Men 3: The Last Stand. I really enjoyed the film, though it was very short on actual storyling and focused much more on action. The second DVD is actually a current WWE DVD called Best of Saturday Night's Main Event. It was released in February and I finished it in early March. So it took almost two months to post it, what can ya do? It was a cool DVD looking at the prime-time WWE.

Finally, I have a new episode of Superstars ready for you, it is the January 19th, 1991 episode, which was the day of the Royal Rumble, so they were in full sell mode at that point.

Also, I have been toying around with the idea of getting rid of TPL and just posting everything on here. Why have two blogs running concurrently? So I was thinking of posting everything here, and still keeping all the TPL stuff together on my website. So if I were to do that, I would post on here almost every day of the week with a schedule that looks like this:
Sunday - DVD Review
Monday - TV Shows (during the season they are on of course)
Tuesday - TPL
Wednesday - day off
Thursday - WWE Superstars or other Legacy Reviews
Friday - Another Day off!
Saturday - TPL Graphic Novel Review.

I quite like that, and I think I will do that starting this week. Anyway, enjoy the rest of the weekend and the rest of May! I can't way until the end of June and summer vacation!
