WWE: Monday Night Raw 02/15/93
April 1st, 2009

Monday Night Raw 02/15/93 (42:28)

Some pre-recorded Brutus Beefcake and Ted DiBiase promo’s start this show off, with Jimmy Hart looking a bit worried for Barber while in Ted’s corner.

Your hosts are Vince McMahon, Rob Bartlett and Macho Man Randy Savage.

-The Steiner Brothers vs. Ben Root & Bobby Who-
I may have gotten the names of the jobbers wrong, but I won’t lose too much sleep over it. Scott starts and almost paralyzes Root with a full-nelson suplex. Scott comes in and does an overhead release belly to belly suplex on Who. Perhaps the most interesting thing in this match is Savage’s microphone not working and him complaining about it. Who is almost beheaded by a Rick lariat, and the super-bulldog finishes this at 3:32. Basic squash. 1/2*.

-Yokozuna vs. Ross Greenburn-
Ross runs into a clothesline and gets belly to bellied to the mat. Yoko follows with a fat legdrop, an avalanche and a banzai drop to finish this at 2:02. DUD.

Hayes shows us the Duggan/Yokozuna match-up from one Superstars. Long story short, Duggan knocked Yoko over but gets squashed afterwards and suffers “internal bleeding.” Fuji cuts a promo after this special report.

Vince talks about the Battle Royale in this episode and people bailing because Giant Gonzales will be competing. We then go to footage of Superstars of the Giant one beating up on jobber Louie Spicoli.

-16-Man Battle Royale-
Let’s see, we have Backlund, Santana, Terry Taylor, Kimchee, Kamala, Razor Ramon, Bezerker, Tatanka, Owen Hart, Koko B. Ware, Shawn Michaels, Skinner, Typhoon, Damien Demento, and someone else whose face I can’t see. That person is eliminated first and no one even makes mention of it. Oh well. Lots of punching right now. Koko’s dumped by Michaels. By the way, Bartlett’s been taken off commentary now as Savage took his microphone. Typhoon dumps Skinner at 4:47, and Demento’s out thanks to Kamala at 5:05. Owen’s gone at 5:38 at the hands of Bezerker and he kicked out by Kamala at 6:16. Kamala gets dumped at 6:56 by Typhoon and Kimchee and when Kamala sees it was Kimchee who dumped him, he runs in and tosses him at 7:18. Kamala chases Kimchee through the crowd and the camera follows them as we go to break. We come back with Skinner and Damien Demento absent, having been tossed during the commercial. Typhoon charges Michaels and he ducks and Typhoon eliminates himself at 9:02. The final four are Michaels, Ramon, Tatanka and Santana. Ramon and Santana square off, with Santana hitting the flying forearm on him. Michaels then squares off with Santana only to get double teamed and tossed into the corner a bunch of times and is then kicked out at 11:59. Razor’s double-teamed, too and now we have Giant Gonzales coming out. Razor slides out though the ring allowing Gonzalez to eliminate Tatanka at 12:44 and Santana at 12:54. Razor slides back into the ring and is announced as the winner at 13:36. The first 9 minutes were boring as hell, the three minutes of the final four were entertaining, but Gonzalez quickly killed that. This was a bad battle royale. *.

-Ted DiBiase vs. Brutus The Barber Beefcake-
So, Beefcake had been injured in a para-sailing incident two-years ago and needed to get his whole face reconstructed. This would be his big return to wrestling, against a cutthroat Ted DiBiase. Ted was one-half of the tag team champions at the time and was managed by Jimmy Hart, who showed sympathy for Beefcake and was worried about him getting hurt against DiBiase, the first time he showed sympathy in his WWE career. So, Beefcake struts around a bit, embarrassing DiBiase. Ted tries to land a haymaker to Brutus’ face but is slugged to the outside. DiBiase regroups only to get slugged to the outside once again. Brutus locks on a side headlock as IRS comes down to ringside, with a metal briefcase. Brutus is whipped to the ropes whereby IRS hits Brutus in the back with the briefcase, drawing the DQ at 4:26. Things quickly go downhill for Beefcake, as IRS drives the briefcase into the skull of Beefcake, despite Hart’s protesting. I remember watching this as a kid and being, what the hell? These guys are freaking evil! The match was just a set up for this big angle that would bring Hulk back to the WWE and set up their Wrestlemania match. It’s still a well-done angle. Not much of a match, though. ¾*.

The show ends with Vince telling us that Brutus is alright (just a broken nose) with hype for next week’s show.

WWE Legacy Online
April 2nd, 2009

I just recently ordered this online service from WWE, since I currently don't get WWE 24/7 and I did want some sort of On Demand service. It's going through the computer which isn't as cool as the TV but it'll do. I will be reviewing things from here and putting them on here and definitely my website as well. In fact, if you head over the wrestling section you'll find the Raw I posted yesterday as well as a brand new link called, fittingly enough, Legacy. I just added Fink's Greatest Wrestlemania Moments which is the first bit of new content on there, even though it's not very new (all the matches I'd reviewed before) and the Greatest part is a bit of a misnomer. Anyway, expect more from me on that end as I wade through the Raws up there, and all the great matches found on there.

Incredible Hulk
April 5th, 2009

Well, we're back for another DVD review, this one being reviewed way back at the end of November. It's the Incredible Hulk special edition and it is leaps and bounds better than the original one. Do me a favor and check out the review!

As you noticed I started doing wrestling reviews again, this time with content from WWE Legacy Online. I don't expect to get a lot of reviews done on there, but I will try to do a little something every week, possibly the Monday Night Raws they have up there.

I don't have much going on this week. I have three more days of work than an always needed 11-day break and I hope to get a lot of work done both in the house and for school.

Season 3 Episode 22: Turn and Face the Strange
Noah isn’t convinced the Sylar cadaver he saw was really Sylar. Meanwhile, Angela calls and tells Noah she and the family are going to a place called Coyote Sands, the site of an abandoned government project aimed to take out the super-powered people in the 60’s. Suresh wants to go back to India but not before going back to his father’s apartment and finding something about Coyote Sands. Hiro and Ando try to get back East but the baby is causing all the vehicles he is in to stop. Bennett is too obsessed with Sylar to help the Petrelli’s and finds out the Sylar he saw was in fact a fake. His life comes crashing down when Sandra files for divorce, though it is really Sylar trying to destroy his life. Bennett does realize that Sylar is a shape shifter but Sylar still succeeds in Bennett going bonkers. Parkman goes after Danko and is about to eat a bullet when Hiro interrupts and stops time. It seems that Coyote Sands houses a mass tomb of some sort. I love how they’ve streamlined this to a more manageable cast and the stories are much more improved. The second part to Season Three is the best this show has been in years.

2 New 1993 Monday Night Raw reviews added
April 10th, 2009

I forgot to post this a few days ago, but two more Raw reviews have been added, both from 1993. There's the February 22nd and the March 1st show that are now residing on the website, with the link here to the main Raw page. I'll be here on Sunday for another DVD review!

Happy Easter!
April 12th, 2009

I just want to wish everyone a Happy Easter to those who celebrate it. I went to mass today, and it was ridiculously crowded. It kind of takes away from the impact of what Easter means when you have people showing up out of the woodwork for one day thinking that'll be enough to save their souls or something like that.

So this week's DVD review is a long-time coming, having finished it on December 11th, 2008. It's Family Guy Volume 6, and I'm glad I was able to post it before the next one comes out in June.

I started this week with work but have been off for 4 days now, with another 7 days of rest coming up. TPL will be delayed this week as I just relax and honestly, I haven't even been to my LCS yet to pick up the new batch, so expect a double-header for next Tuesday. I have been working hard, finishing a couple of Marvel Masterworks reviews, working on a bunch of WWE Legacy stuff, finishing another DVD review and hopefully I'll have another one done by the end of this week. I also plan on having an NHL Playoff Preview up here by tomorrow and the Heroes review by mid-week! Talk about a loaded schedule!

NHL 2009 Playoff Preview
April 13th, 2009

It’s that time of year again! Yes, I come back from my NHL hibernation to discuss the playoff match-ups.

Eastern Conference
(1) Boston vs. (8) Montreal
You always have to appreciate an Original Six match-up and this is one rivalry that’s been pretty decent in recent years. They met in the playoffs last year with the roles reversed (Boston was the 8th seed and Montreal #1) and Boston took the Canadiens to the limit before falling in 7 games. I don’t think this will be as close this year. Boston has been one hell of a team and definitely the class of the Eastern Conference. Tim Thomas has played amazingly this year and a solid defense led by Zdeno Chara and a well-rounded offense led by Marc Savard make the Bruins the team to beat, and Montreal won’t be able to do it. Boston holds the season series 5 games to one and I don’t see this series playing out any differently.
Prediction: Boston in Five

(2) Washington vs. (7) New York Rangers
Washington has Mike Green and Alexander Ovechkin. The New York Rangers have Henrik Lundqvist. This will be simple for the Rangers. They need to shut down Ovechkin and Green and maybe then they will have a chance. I think you may know this by now but I am a huge Ranger fan but I am not delusional. The only shot the Rangers have is if Avery can get inside the heads of the stars on the Caps and if Lundqvist plays at a near super-human level. I firmly believe that Washington, who won the season series three games to one will dominate the Rangers and win handily.
Prediction: Capitals in Five

(3) New Jersey vs. (6) Carolina
This is an interesting match-up. I don’t know too much about the Canes as they are seemingly forgotten by all in most major NHL markets. The Devils had an incredible season considering they were missing their star, Martin Brodeur, for most of the season. The Canes, who beat the Devils 3 times in their four meetings, have a solid overall team, led by Staal and the goaltending of Cam Ward. Ward has stood on his head most nights to keep the Canes where they are and this isn’t as one-sided a series as it may seem. The Canes hold three wins over the Devils, twice beating Brodeur in March. Brodeur has a knack to bringing things up a notch in the playoffs and I think that the experience of the Devils will be able to overcome the scrappiness of the Canes.
Prediction: New Jersey in Six

(4) Pittsburgh vs. (5) Philadelphia
It’s a battle of Atlantic Division foes. The Atlantic Division sent four teams to the playoffs again this year, repeating the feat it accomplished last year. This will be an epic series as most are between the in-state rivals. The Penguins have Crosby and Malkin with Fleury in net while the Flyers boast the offensive talents of Briere, Carter and Richards. This will stem on how well Fleury can perform. The Penguins made it to the finals last year with pretty much the same team and that experience will help the Pens overcome the Flyers. The Penguins won the season series four games to two, and that’s how I see this panning out as well.
Prediction: Penguins in Six

Western Conference
I don’t know the West coast as much as I do the East, but I will do my best.

(1) San Jose vs. (8) Anaheim
The San Jose train hit a couple of bumps the last few days of the season but they should steer the ship right by the start of the playoffs. I don’t see the Ducks putting up much of a fight, though you can by no means overlook the great line of Perry and Getzlaf. With secondary scoring from Selanne they will definitely be reckoned with, but the Sharks hold the overwhelming advantage. The first line of Anaheim is great, but not the level of Joe Thornton and whoever he may be playing with at the time. Nabokov is a better starting goalie than Hiller (and boy, did Giguere fall to the wayside or what?) and the Sharks are just deeper than the Ducks up front. Defensively you have Pronger and Neidermayer for the Ducks, though they aren’t as young as they used to be. Boyle’s produced a great year for the Sharks and they just look hungry this year. The Sharks took the season series 4 games to 2, and this is shaping up to be more of the same.
Prediction: San Jose in Five

(2) Detroit vs. (7) Columbus
Detroit had another incredible regular season and that is really no surprise. They are a veritable powerhouse. They have scoring up and down their roster and were a powerhouse this year. They are the defending champs as well. However, the Blue Jackets are playing amazingly well as of late, thanks to the goaltending of Steve Mason. I can see Mason stealing this series and is my one series to watch in terms of a potential upset. The Red Wings will end up prevailing, but not before Columbus, who tied the season series with the Wings at three apiece, makes this interesting.
Prediction: Detroit in Seven

(3) Vancouver vs. (6) St. Louis
It’s nice to see St. Louis back in the playoffs. It is a very important first step for the Blues to get back into prominence. They are a very young team and an experience like this in the playoffs will surely help them grow. The Blues won’t last long in the playoffs though, as the Canucks are just too good and too deep to be taken out by the young team. The Sedin twins, Mats Sundin, the surprising play of Burrows, and the always solid Luongo will make this a quick and easy one, as long as the Canucks don’t fall into a funk like they did in March. This was a season series that was tied at 2 games each, though St. Louis won’t put up that big of a fight this time around.
Prediction: Vancouver in Four

(4) Chicago vs. (5) Calgary
Chicago is another team I am glad to see back in the playoffs. Calgary was a solid team this year thanks to the duo of Cammalleri and Iginla, but the goaltending hasn’t been as good as it has been in the past. Chicago has been riding high with Khabibulin and their final two-game sweep of Detroit to end the season gives Chicago the confidence they need to go far this year. Plus, the Blackhawks will benefit with the return of Patrick Sharp. The Hawks swept the Flames in the four games they played, but I can see Calgary picking up a game at home to at least keep it somewhat respectable.
Prediction: Chicago in Five

Looking Ahead
I guess I didn’t make any wild predictions as I have all the top four seeds advancing in each conference. It would set up some interesting match-ups, like Boston vs. Pittsburgh and Washington vs. New Jersey in the East to go along with San Jose vs. Chicago and Detroit vs. Vancouver in the West. Looking beyond that, Boston/Washington and San Jose/Detroit for the Conference Finals would be just awesome and I fully expect a Boston/San Jose final, with the Thornton storyline being at the forefront of this. Look for San Jose to take it all this year, winning in 7 games.

Season Three Episode 23: 1961
We flashback to February 1961, when Coyote Sands was just opening. Angela and her sister who brought to the place, where Mr. Suresh led them in. She meets Charles Leveaux and two other guys who would become the Company. She tells Peter that her sister and her parents died there. Coyote was a relocation camp where the people were powers were “cured,” or a better term, killed. Angela wants to go back to the old ways so that people don’t know they exist. Peter doesn’t like this and flies away. Angela’s sister, Alice, had the power to control the weather. Soon the weather goes crazy and she thinks it is his sister. HRG is there and runs into Suresh, who is investigating there as well. It turns out that Alice is still alive and has been living there for 50 years, thinking back to a time that Angela lied to her and told to her to stay at the Sands while she went out. Alice witnessed a bloodbath ensue with her family being killed. Alice ends up leaving by episode’s end and we finish with Nathan retiring (again). This was a good episode with the backstory, though the payoff of Angela and Alice left a lot to be desired. Also, why do Suresh and HRG get along? Didn’t HRG kill Suresh’s father in the first episode? Was that ever resolved? Good episode with the Coyote Sands stuff, but the rest left too many questions and not enough answers.
